700820 2008-08-28 00:15:00 That issue could be addressed at either software or monitor level. LCDs emulate non-native resolutions; if the firmware doesn't allow eg. 800x600 to be emulated on a widescreen LCD with blank spaces on either side to retain the aspect ratio, that is a design deficiency in the LCD. It ought to be done in the LCD, from a technical point of view. :badpc:

That's what I think too. Video card should not have to do it (because not all of them can)

700821 2008-08-28 00:16:00 I wasn't meaning to say that there are no 4:3 LCDs still available, just there aren't very many. What is available seems to be old models, old stock. The Dell linked to above is overpriced and only 16ms.

Its not overpriced for what it is. Response time no longer matters as they are all fast enough anyway. If anything, a higher response time is quite a good indicator of panel quality (along with viewing angles and number of colours reproduced) TN panels can only display around 250k colours, while higher quality screens can display the full 16.7m. TN have response times between 2 and 5ms. Better quality screens are typically higher. If I were to get a 20" lcd panel, that linked 2007FP would be the one to get.

Sure it is old, but it is one of the few IPS panels available; you know with nearly all LCDs these days, when you move your head higher or lower, it either gets darker or brighter? This panel doesn't do that, hence the price. It gives image quality comparable to a CRT.

I'm not aware of any other monitor in NZ which has better image quality for less than $1200.

I'm actually surprised the 2007 is still available, I was a bit sad to see it go.

700822 2008-09-05 13:25:00 It looks like it is hit and miss on whether that LCD is an IPS panel

700825 2008-09-07 11:29:00 I would suggest that the move to wide screen was to create a market as most people have 4:3 monitors and TV's. I don't agree that wide screens are better (I use 2 lcd screens at work anyway). dolby digital (5073)
