699614 2008-08-25 06:54:00 Why would it be any different to one you buy for a desktop?

I think the point was,why is it zoned, not where is it situated.

699615 2008-08-25 09:51:00 I'd love to know what idiot decided that my laptop (for working in all parts of the world) should be fitted with a zoned DVD.....

You can probably patch that with firmware from rpc1.org or just use a program like DVD43 :D

699616 2008-08-25 22:53:00 My Pioneer DVR630H was only Zone 4. I went back to the shop where I bought it, and they called the importer who said it should have been multi zone, and it must have slipped through their system. Following their advice I took it to the importer and for no charge they re-chipped it and it is now multi zone. John H (8)
699617 2008-08-25 23:18:00 I think the shop should organise, they made the profit and sold with faulty zone system. Cicero (40)
699618 2008-08-25 23:27:00 I think it is more a case of "caveat emptor", so I was happy to make the arrangements. The shop never said it was multi zone when I bought it - I just assumed it was, because I had previously bought two multi zone Pioneer DVD players from the same supplier (one for us, and later on another one for my son's family). I naively assumed Pioneer was always multi zone.

It pays to check out assumptions, and I failed to do so - the shop would have been at fault if I had asked and they had stated it was multi.

699619 2008-08-26 07:13:00 If you are happy putting up with that, then so am I.

Perhaps you can tell us the point of a shop selling a unit that works some of the time!

699620 2008-08-26 22:13:00 All fixed, took less than 10 seconds including switch on time .

The remote arrived, turned on DVD player, pointed remote at it, held down button A and pressed 1 . Put in US zoned DVD, pressed play, watched .

Mrs T will be happy, but she's back at work, sick or not, so it will be the weekend before she can enjoy the fruits of my labour . Unfortunately I can't claim much in the way of brownie points, she was in the room when I changed it and not for the first time in my life I heard those dreaded words:

"Was that it?"

My mistake . :(

Cheers

As usual, a chunk of profit; good product or bad product, all money is the same colour .

You pays your money, and then takes your Vista like a man ;)

As I understand it Ciccy, from the point of view of home entertainment machines, not stand-alone units for computers, retailers authorised to sell a major brand name such as Sony or Panasonic are legally prohibited from selling multizone versions. Parallel importers have no such restrictions up front, but can still suffer legal action or other sanctions if they do, and get caught.

The situation for DVD players for computers is a little different and is much harder to police.

Cheers

My DVD recorder purchased from across the road from where my friend bought hers,is multi zone.
Did you note that firm required her machine for two days to change to multi zone.Slightly different from your experience.

I think the problems arise on this subject are due to ignorance. Most of the wallies in shops don't know what is going on.
