698900 2008-08-21 03:13:00 Eh - why haven't you got SP1? Just havn't got around to installing it. Havn't had any pressing need to either. Some day when I reformat mejobloggs (264)
698901 2008-08-21 03:33:00 If the general department store in NZ pushed $1500 laptops/desktops that had a minimum of 2GB of RAM then you would find less and less people crying and dribbling about Vistas so called problems.

I can 100% prove that Vista problems are related to cheap ****ty sub $1000 laptops. I have done my research with focus groups and testers.

And I have tested it myself on decent hardware.
My problem with it is the incredible amount of bloat and nags in it. And the fact that most of the bundled crap is exactly that - worthless MS apps that don't work.

698902 2008-08-21 03:37:00 Vista doesn't nag me very often, and doesn't feel bloated. I use Windows Media Centre sometimes, and while it has got its quirks, overall it's very good. pcuser42 (130)

698904 2008-08-21 04:58:00 Yeah I don't notice bloat or nags

Imo, while Vista may not be much of an upgrade from XP, it's still a good OS, and I would never downgrade to XP

CAUTION . . . COMMENT CONTAINS OVER THIRTY WORDS,
AND SOME OF THEM ARE MULTI-SYLLABIC!

Prolly not worth much to you coming from me . . . but I agree with you 100% here .

A friend (yeah . . . . I got one of them!) with a brand new PC w/ multi gig RAM and lots of processor and speed has nothing but lots of nags and pop-ins all the time .

It's a pain in the doopah to add or download anything as it's always asking who in the world you are and what right you have to do it .

If Vista is so smart, why can't it just load some minimum drivers and once it's on-line go get the ones it needs on a "as-needed" basis to keep all the crappola off the installation CD-ROM?

XP has wizards; why oh why can't Vista do it one better by discovering new hardware and just get what's needed? Licensing and digital signing would be a lot easier if Billy's replacement (what's-his-name) had a throat squeeze on the OPSYS and drivers .

Maybe then Vista could be shipped on a couple of floppies .

Coupled with RAM-sucking graphics and transparencies and such and I think the CPU would be a lot happier just running a lot less garbage and generating a lot less heat . . . especially an Athlon which will run hot just putting up a flash screen at boot time .

Nope . . I agree that XP is gonna stay in my stuff for a while . . that is until I get some L-based something or other that doesn't need line commands and is a lot friendlier to me . But then again - I am special and will not take what I don't want .

I'm older now, I know how to use it to my advantage and I can get crotchety if I wanna

. . . just like a few others here (nameless entities referenced ) who still run Win95 .

Bah! Humbug!

698907 2008-08-21 06:50:00 I think the biggest problem with people finding vista running like crap is not the OS, or even (to some extent) the hardware.
It is the folks who buy it preinstalled on their name brand PC or laptop which is overflowing with bloatware and poor driver setup.

Ahah ! I see it all. When you are dead, Vista is the OS of choice?

698909 2008-08-21 22:26:00 I think the reason that Vista has not done that well sales and conversion wise is that it was not hyped up much by Microsoft like other windows releases were.

Probably due to the fact that they knew there was nothing to hype up.

I have XP on a couple of desk tops and Vista on a Laptop. I am happy with the way Vista runs on my laptop.

But what I would like to know is what are the benefits of upgrading to Vista ?
I have only found two.
Gadgets which are great
The navigation bar at the top of folder windows is very handy.

Are there any others ?

They talk about security, but they should have made XP secure.
