700810 2008-08-27 20:20:00 What are they like for playing older games? The ones that only support lower resolutions. Do they have black bars either side?

Not always. A lot of them just stretch the image to fit. which looks like ****. And a good reason why I don't like them

That's all to do with the PC, rather than the monitor. Older PCs often don't have the capabilities of either displaying the right resolution, or simply don't scale/resize things properly.

nVidia drivers allow you to keep the picture at the monitor's default resolution which means black bars on the sides & top. This allows older games to look relatively normal on a bigger display.

700813 2008-08-27 21:39:00 Widescreen monitors have a perceived market for gamers and movie watchers I suppose. Since the majority of the documents I read are in portrait format, I find widescreen would only be useful for yawning on. One hopes that proper monitors will always be available ;)

What you want is what Apple had years ago in there DTP area. A WS monitor that can swivel to portrait then back to widescreen..

700814 2008-08-27 21:48:00 Hmm. SWMBO thinks that widescreen are a better fit for her eyes. Maybe so. R2x1 (4628)

700817 2008-08-27 22:00:00 I would think (haven't tried it) that a widescreen rotated to portrait would be the bees knees for what you do.

Thats why my new L shaped screens are so good !

That issue could be addressed at either software or monitor level. LCDs emulate non-native resolutions; if the firmware doesn't allow eg. 800x600 to be emulated on a widescreen LCD with blank spaces on either side to retain the aspect ratio, that is a design deficiency in the LCD. It ought to be done in the LCD, from a technical point of view. :badpc:

700819 2008-08-27 22:53:00 Are 4:3 LCD monitors really going to go out of production?

Yes.

Currently one of my suppliers that sells Viewsonic have exactly one 4:3, and thats it.
