699796 2008-08-24 02:27:00 Why not stay in New Zealand and give something back to the country that brought you up and paid for all of your basic education and most of your university education ?

It's too hard to earn a living here with the tax, gst, expense, broadband as such.As much as I love NZ I do not mind staying if the country has a better economy

I was thinking of staying but then I had a talk with someone

He asked me if I stay in NZ what am I likely to do?

I was thinking of working for an ISP probably do customer service first.

The guy said to me you'll have better opportunities overseas and better pay .It is hard to find a good job in NZ with high pay

I even said to the guy that with the way NZ is going. The Tax,GST and the costs of internet it is really hard to pay back my loan.I don't wanna spend half of my lifetime paying my loan .My friend earns so much in japan he is travelling the world and he's like 23 years old.He was born and grew up in NZ.NZ born kiwi

You'll be better off working in HK as your parents are over there.
You have better chance there than here with the range of job that they offer and of course you may travel to other places while your in hk like singapore, malaysia,UK,Unitd states and get to meet other people while in NZ the further you will go would probably be from Auckland to Wellington or ChristChurch.

I was like I guess so.. Seems a bit uninteresting

The only thing that will prevent me from leaving NZ at the moment is having a relationship with someone but I doubt that will happen as I'm more into finishing my studies then to go out clubbing

I would probably choose to go and work in Australia though

Regarding moving in general, im pretty dead set, generally just bored of new zealand and a lot of the people around. Aussie/London just seem way more alive & active. I mean 3am london streets are PACKED, and not just with clubbers, that tells u somethin.

maybe later on when im like 35 40 I might come back and chill here with the family but till then I wanna get out there and earn some real money

At the moment based on my own ideas & those suggested by others, I'm thinking of getting some work experience first for about a year or so, then looking to make the move

Im wondering though if I should go like Sydney then London or straight London. Some people have said that it could be useful to go Australia then London cause it's a good stepping stone so to speak...

Ideally Looking for a job in IT/Logistics somethin along those lines and as johcar suggested, could be useful to look into a freight forwarding company... ironically I turned down a job from one such company just recently but only cause I wasn't able to start working till next year (09)

Any other good avenues to look into in terms of employers???

Thoughts?

Assuming that you are going to return to NZ after your OE then I would recommend that you go now. Why wait? You can give something back when you return.

But look a bit further than Australia. It's just a bigger and more brash NZ. London is a completely different experience and so worth the effort.

I was of the opinion that, because we are English, the UK would be very similar to NZ but I found that to be completely incorrect. Certainly they speak English and drive on the same side of the road, but that is where the similarities end. I could write a small volume about the contrasts. That in itself is a great education and experience.

The other big advantage is that it is but a short hop to the continent and weekend forays to France and beyond can be quick, easy and cheap. You don't get that in Australia.

I'm not trying to put you off Australia, but leave it until later. Australia is BIG, the countryside is varied and in most cases, the people are great, but in the same way as you can hop across the ditch from NZ almost anytime, so you can hop across to Europe from London, anytime.

Step out, make the effort. I'm certain you will not regret it!

699801 2008-08-24 22:11:00 It is only natural to want to branch out and see the world when you are young, but there are a few truths you want to be aware of.

A University degree with no commercial experience is not a passport to a well paid job, most employers want someone with relevant experience, so you need to acquire that before you book your flight - ie work in NZ for a couple of years.

Secondly, when you are comparing salary scales, you also have to compare the cost of living, UK pay scales, especially London, seem great in comparison to NZ, but the cost of living in the UK, especially London, matches the pay scale, and once one gets down to the nitty gritty of living in the UK, keeping a reasonable roof over your head, and food on the table, you will find the UK salary is just as tight as the NZ salary. A pound goes about as far in Britain as a dollar does in NZ.

The cost of living in England is high, the quality of life for the average Brit, cannot compare with New Zealand, and you will find that many activities and pass times that Kiwis can take for granted if they wish to pursue them are the preserves of the wealthy.

London and the UK in general are exciting, there is over 2000 years of relevant history, London is one of the great cultural capitals of the world, and NZ has little that can compare, but I can assure you living the good life is expensive, and living and working there should not be seen as a long term option , and if you are not entitled to a UK passport, then your time there will be strictly limited.

There is also the weather factor, bloody awful in comparison to NZ would describe it, it costs a fortune to keep warm in winter.

I am offering you this advice from the experience of living in the UK for many years, I was an officer in the Royal Air Force, I was well paid, had a fairly privileged lifestyle, and was fortunately in the position to take advantage of much of what Britain has to offer, but I can assure you that as a place to raise a family NZ beats the UK hands down. UK is great if you have the money to live a good lifestyle, not so good if you don't.

I can highly recommend Australia as a country to live and work in; the cost of living in Brisbane is lower than Auckland's, and the pay rates are on average 40-50% higher in real terms. Sydney has higher pay scales, but the higher cost of living, (accommodation especially) means that the average person is no better off, in fact probably worse off than their counterpart in Brisbane.

Australia, economically speaking is in the top 10 world wide for strength of the national economy, and people who are well qualified and prepared to work
will do well, but don't roll up in Australia with a fresh new University diploma without relevant business experience and expect to walk into a well paid job - generally such miracles are rare

I have always fancied going to UK but it didnt work out. Currently i am in US now and financially i have no regrets of leaving NZ.

I couldnt even afford to get a decent house in Auck...here in US with housing downturn and foreclosures i have striked lucky with a big as house for a mere 300k. Everything is dirt cheap right from petrol to foodstuff comp to NZ which translates into more savings

I am doing same IT Job (NOC) and getting 40% higher pay then same job I did in Auck. When i applied for job, they just went by my IT exp in NZ and didnt create fuss abt my MIT (non Uni) bachelors.

The only major expense here for me that i never had in NZ are hefty Insurance premiums for car/medical....., if u dont have medical insurance and were in some car crash, the medical bills would def bankrupt u!...No ACC equivalent here to take care of u.

699805 2008-08-25 06:16:00 I spent 15 yrs in the UK, went over when I was about 21, I actually got into IT over there!
However, as Ken said before, London, where the good contracts are, is expensive....
