699604 2008-08-24 05:25:00 Ya.I buy a dvd player I should expect to play multizone.

I have never bought a dvd player because they are zoned

Is it actually illegal to sell a dvd player that isn't zoned?

699605 2008-08-24 07:12:00 I work at Retravision and if somebody wants their Panasonic DVD Player Multi zoned The TV repair Tech has to come and do it with a Special Remote-it's not a standard Panasonic remote. Philips are easy to do and can be done by the end user. radium (8645)

699607 2008-08-24 23:45:00 Problem soon to be solved. My original background was electronic servicing so I called up an old mate who runs a fairly big service department and he's couriering me the special remote and instructions even I should be able to follow. He reckons that even the info they got was deficient and they had to trial and error their way through.

Zone constraints used to be in firmware but just about all manufacturers use software coding now that can be changed at will if you have the right remote control. I believe the Zone restrictions were implemented by the DVD producers at the behest of the content copyright owners to help control timing of the release of major titles in different markets, so the big brand manufacturers have to play by the rules.

Machines made by anonymous Asian manufacturers can be produced in multi-zone format because they have no brand name or market share to protect.

Bottom line: Mrs T will be happy and I will get brownie points!

It applies to all major brand names as far as I know Ciccy. They can all be multi-zoned and the cheapest way is to take it in to an authorised service agent. I wouldn't pay a house call for something so trivial and I reckon many would do the change free.

Mrs T is much better thanks, she's gone off to work, still hacking and coughing but on the mend I hope. I told her to stay in bed but my views don't carry a lot of weight around here these days. :(

Both she and I have new units, hers won't play DVDs given away in England when you buy weekend paper.
Mine does.I will suggest problem should be solved by her supplier.

Why would it be any different to one you buy for a desktop?
