698890 2008-08-21 02:01:00 People buy $899 Acers with 1GB of RAM that has Vista on and complain that Vista is the cause of the problem. People feel insulted and offended that their idea of a sub $1000 laptop is a waste of time and money.

It's impossible to educate the general public on how much money they need to spend to get a decent laptop because they are ignorant and want the cheapest possible solution but also expect it to work like a high performance machine.

If the general department store in NZ pushed $1500 laptops/desktops that had a minimum of 2GB of RAM then you would find less and less people crying and dribbling about Vistas so called problems.

I can 100% prove that Vista problems are related to cheap ****ty sub $1000 laptops. I have done my research with focus groups and testers.

Yes, but a lot of people dont NEED Vista, and they dont NEED a $1500 laptop - both are overkill if all you want to do is email/ word processing and some web surfing. People should have the option of XP for low end laptops such as those you describe. I still have an older laptop which still runs like a high performance machine - on XP - and it certainly wouldnt on Vista. The ASUS Eee PC is pretty low end, but runs great with XP.

Certainly Vista SP1 is a lot more reliable and stable apparently, but is still overkill for plenty of people. It would make sense if both options were made available - and many vendors have realised this, and do this especially with laptops.

Peter

698891 2008-08-21 02:19:00 A Kenworth is quite capable of fetching home a litre of milk, but it doesn't seem altogether sensible. Al the frilly bits that mean your ride is so pimped that it has to be at least a Kenworth do not make the milk any better in your cup of tea. R2x1 (4628)

Supporting this, my friend bought an Acer laptop with 512MB of RAM and Vista Home Basic. It ran like a snail. (The Celeron didn't help either.)

698896 2008-08-21 02:55:00 I'm still running Vista Non-SP1 on my laptop with only 1gb ram and a 1.6ghz dual core cpu.

Runs absolutely fine, I even game on it

Dunno what all the fuss is about.

Yeah, and a Skoda = XP.

Vista installs so much quicker than XP (for me).
Vista recognises so much more hardware straight out of the box.
Vista boots faster.

698899 2008-08-21 03:12:00 Up to 100% faster -
Almost 50% more recognition -
Needs a quick boot -

And over 500% more advertising on TV.

Wow. Send some to elsewhere right now - bill to others and would you include the Ginsu knives. Also the thicker aisles please. Am I the thirteenth caller? ;)
