2009-10-22 21:59:00 | I think they all charge for incoming traffic - its not just a Telecom thing, but it would be odd if someone/something was trying that hard out for so long to access your PC. Yes - there will always be a tiny amount of traffic even if everything is switched off - but it should be tiny. I wonder if a faulty network card/router could cause this sort of thing - still, something on the PC is probably the most likely cause.

2009-10-22 22:51:00 | You seem to not do much at all on the internet... so what DO you download? I would try installing something like NetMeter www.metal-machine.de See if that shows network usage even while you aren't doing anything online...

If you can prove it's not you, then Telecom needs to look at their side. Generally they or really any ISP would blame the user first. Also monitoring the usage via their site would also be another data source you can use to prove it's not actually you.. Anyway, I would like to see how this goes. |

2009-10-23 00:39:00 | I dont recall how long you have had this problem but this is worth a look: www.geekzone.co.nz Actually this will no doubt be what is causing you grief...... Telecom seem to be having serious metering issues at the moment. Someone shows that telecom thinks he downloaded 86GB and uploaded 13GB in a day! I'd like to know how it would be physically possible. Doesnt sound like Telecom are being to upfront about it though. If people just acknowledge an issue and give you a band aid to solve the issue for now its usually enough to keep you happy. I had several periods a while ago where IHUG and later Vodafone seemed to have crazy things happen to the data tracking. I rang them and while I was on the phone they talked to a 'supervisor' and reset the counts back to zero for the month. I think the data figures rebuilt themselves slowly and correctly over the next couple of days. While I wasnt happy it happened (and I think I got stuck on dialup speed for one day), at least they tried to sort it out. If you are on a capped plan restart your router - it might have been throttled to dialup - if they have lifted that resetting the router *should* put it right immediately.

2009-10-23 02:30:00 | Doesnt sound like Telecom are being to upfront about it though . How much more up front are they supposed to be, bearing in mind that shortly after the problem began they replaced the usage meter when you log in to it with a message saying sorry there is a usage meter error that is being worked on, and put an announcement to that effect on their helpdesk phone line so you hear it if you call up? Oh, and it's listed as a known issue on their service status page and has been for the last couple days now . I'm not having a go at your comment btw, I really jusy don't see how much more up front they can be .

2009-10-23 02:55:00 | Perhaps "Doesnt sound like Telecom are being too upfront about it though" wasnt quite the right way to put it. Some of the people on that forum had been given a bit of a run around and it did take a little while before they seemed to acknowledge it to people who phoned. Sometimes though it takes a while for the 'facts' to get all the way through an organisation - thats pretty frustrating. I never actually mind if a place has a problem - just tell me straight away and try and keep the news up to date. TelstraClear would get a big raspberry this week for their ISP problems on Tuesday I think it was. Took them hours to post anything on their site and they didnt update the site much with news - even a revised posting time saying "still working on it" is better than a 3 hour old post that says squat. Actually I would have to say that geekzone is excellent for news of telco issues. You get problems reported on there PDQ and the telcos seem to respond immediately to problems even down to individually helping people sometimes.

2009-10-23 06:18:00 | Okay, I thought I would post you wonderful people my usage stats to see what your reaction is. All I do on the internet on a daily basis is e-mails, surf traffic exchanges and update my anti virus software etc. (every day I do the exact same tasks) 25 Sep 2009 - 09 Oct 2009 10591.41 594.03 11185.44 10 Sep 2009 - 24 Sep 2009 11758.92 639.40 12398.32 23 Aug 2009 - 09 Sep 2009 12417.63 800.97 13218.60 10 Aug 2009 - 22 Aug 2009 3924.32 216.48 4140.80 10 Jul 2009 - 09 Aug 2009 29826.45 1954.13 31780.58 22 Jun 2009 - 09 Jul 2009 6666.74 782.23 7448.97 23 Oct 2009 188.01 32.42 220.43 22 Oct 2009 189.25 35.68 224.93 21 Oct 2009 286.28 58.76 345.04 20 Oct 2009 88.30 19.15 107.45 19 Oct 2009 366.48 63.04 429.52 18 Oct 2009 2711.04 172.02 2883.06 17 Oct 2009 2437.59 170.06 2607.65 16 Oct 2009 251.52 19.81 271.33 15 Oct 2009 115.59 9.15 124.74 14 Oct 2009 0.00 0.00 0.00 13 Oct 2009 0.00 0.00 0.00 12 Oct 2009 0.00 0.00 0.00 11 Oct 2009 0.00 0.00 0.00 10 Oct 2009 0.00 0.00 0.00 Obviously Octobers usage may not be the best example, but, Im sure you will get the picture. 10-14 Oct my computer was turned off, as I was away. 17-18 Oct Your guess is as good as mine. All other days in October reflect the correct usage for the work I am doing on the internet. As I have previously stated, when I am on broadband speed my usage gets gobbled up within a week, then, as soon as I am back on the dial up speed, my daily usage reverts back to what I should be using. Telecom will not take any responsibility for this and of course have blamed me, I spoke to a supervisor today and he has put me on to the Tier 2 specialist broadband team, I will post the outcome as soon as I hear back from them.

2009-10-24 01:59:00 | Do you have other people that ever use your PC? Kids? That spike was last weekend. Any visitors? I assume the column after the date is download usage in MB, then upload, then total usage.
