822603 2009-10-22 02:27:00 TBH SE is actually better than Avast in terms of scanning speed, detection rates(according to WT's tests) and general interface...so no reason not to try it! Blam (54)
822604 2009-10-22 06:17:00 +1 for wratterus thoughts, if you're gonna pay then buy NOD32. Otherwise get Security Essentials. Wainuitech recently did some comparisons and SE came out well and truly on top above Avast :D Chilling_Silence (9)
822605 2009-10-23 03:51:00 Yep, I've converted all here to MSE. I'll be putting it on all comps I get to work on in the future as there are lots of people who get really confused with registrations and nags to update to our MUCH better version (in small print, 'BTW, it will only cost you $$ per yr'). linw (53)
822606 2009-10-23 07:21:00 Windows Security Essentials is fine, I dumped Avast! too.LL

Sounds interesting, where do I find WSE for download? I'm still using W2000 at present, though I'm about to get a new computer built for me and may take a leap of faith with Windows 7. Is WSE compatible with my old OS?

Cheers

Unfortunately W2000 isn't supported by WSE:(

DO move to Windows 7. I want to hear about the learning curve of Window 7 from a non-geek..:p

I can assure you that if and when I make the move, you will probably hear plenty!

Over the years I've migrated from Dos 6.11 to Windows 3.1 then 3.11, W95, W98 and W2000, each bringing its own special range of trials and tribulations. For technical reasons, relating to my occupation and Instrument manufacturers who refuse to update their software (or make it year 2000 compliant) I still need to use Dos, W3.11 and W95/98 so virtual machines, here I come..............

Cheers

822610 2009-10-23 11:39:00 You'll find that even upgrading to a 64-bit OS, provided your CPU supports CPU Virtualization (Google Download: Securable) and Win7 version supports XP-Mode, then you'll still be able to run 16-bit applications, so keep that in mind when looking at upgrading.

As a side note, when Avast pops up saying it's run out, there's a very small 10pt font down the bottom right which mentions re-registering the Free Version, will post the screenshot I took from a laptop later tomorrow ;)

...still recommend MSE instead of Avast though, pity it's not available for Win2K.

Or you could use this if you get home premium or basic:

www.microsoft.com

Then you'll have you use your own XP key though
