700577 2008-08-26 12:53:00 I was wondering if some of you could help me here. :help:

In the next few weeks / month I am really going to have to find another job (As I am not getting much work for my current boss… :()

The thing is since I completed my schooling 6 years ago I have never needed to used my CV before as I have never applied for a job before (The job I have at the moment came about because my mum know my boss wife)

The only other “work” (if you can call it that) I have done is work experience at a local garden centre for a day about 7 years ago.

Would some of you be able to have a look at my CV & let me know what you think of it & if there is anything else I can do to improve it.

You can see my CV Here (lvcac.orconhosting.net.nz) (PDF)
(Note: I have removed my personal deals from it for posting it on here)

:thanks

700578 2008-08-26 13:55:00 You really don't need so much detail about the activities that you did at school and the prizes that you won. Unless you are literally out of school, that information is just filler.

For your employment history, I would have a section for responsibilities and achievements for each job so employers get a perspective of your abilities.

I'll ask my friend who works at the Career Centre for further info and see what he says and get back to you tomorrow.

That’s going to be hard, as 5 of the thing listed under employment history don’t really have any responsibilities (part from what’s listed e.g. webmaster or Photographer or tester) and achievements its very hard to think of many if any achievements with those listed.

700580 2008-08-26 16:23:00 Just a list of the noted achievements will be fine, most people dont read too much into CV's, it will be your personal refs that will get you the job, or if your old boss is willing to put a word in for you.
Also go from recent backwards, so your current employment first and go back so your schooling will be last.
In general they will want to know what your up to now.

700581 2008-08-26 22:29:00 If your CV is inspiring enough, why not submit it for the Booker Prize and change to being an unemployed author? Not much money, but the status is good. R2x1 (4628)
700582 2008-08-26 22:32:00 And if its long, most employers wont bother reading all / or any of it

The shorter the better

That’s going to be a problem as I don’t have any personal refs :( ( I Guess one from your parents don’t count??)

Says you are currently doing IT Support and Web Design. How does that translate into hunting up sales/customers for your boss?

Whatever, you are obviously young and as you say, fairly new to the workplace.
Just list a bit more on what tasks you did and cut some of the unnecessary school achievements out.

Ask if your boos or a supervisor there will provide a reference and thats all you need really.

People won't expect loads of jobs if you are young.......ibn fact it would like a bit suspect wouldn't it.

700585 2008-08-27 01:25:00 I wouldn't be worried about the CV,Keep it as barebones as possible, let the prospective employer know your keen to work, keen to learn, willing to work for bugger all.

Once your given the chance its up to you to blow it or not.

700586 2008-08-27 01:40:00 I see lots of CV's as I employ quite a few - so here goes:

keep it to two pages max
I want to see work history - not school achievements. If you've got a short work history, it's OK.
Start of with a personal statement - Google it - apparently it's the PC thing to do these days. Meh - I don't care, I check work history
It's very important to have a valid work reference, and if you've got problems with the Boss, ask a senior work mate. I don't like family members or friends as referees.

If you got any other questions, PM me.
