I'm looking to buy a new laptop - I seem to go through them or they hate me . Either way, here I am . General purpose, can handle World of Warships, don't care about lightness/portability - more interested in grunt and build quality .

Also need to finance it, so buying my 1st choice (XPS 13) from Dell via their site isn't an option .

Budget is dependent on what repayments I can arrange - mid to high 2's maybe .

HP Spectre 13 sounds good, but have no interest in those 2 in 1 tablet convertible things - just want a simple clamshell . A Honda - bland as batshit but very well made and reliable .

Then I'm looking at Lenovo - Chinese brand built in the US - hardly a great reference but the more I look, the more I read good things . The business usage model, Thinkpad as opposed to Ideapad .

Acer / Asus - never been a fan . I seem to recall one is a cheapy/budget brand but can never remember which one .

MS Surface and Apple products look brilliant, BUT not at those prices .

Keen for opinions if anyone wants to contibute . Off to HN this weekend to have a squiz .

1445000 2018-01-18 01:46:00 You specifically want a 13"? That does limit your options significantly, especially for something with a decent graphics card, and pumps up the price too .

If you could live with a 15 . 6", these are excellent value .

1445001 2018-01-18 02:22:00 No. I'd rather have at least a 15.6 but it seems 13 is more mainstream these days.

Who makes Gigabyte, or are they their own brand?

15.6" would be the most common size with gaming laptops. Gigabyte are one of the top PC mainboard and graphics card manufacturers, and have just recently got serious about notebooks. I've used a few of those sabre notebooks and for the price I don't think they can be beaten. 2 year warranty too.

Another benefit of those particular laptops is they have both the fast M.2 SSD but also a mechanical drive, so you get the best of both worlds.

Not saying they are the best by any means, but at that price point they are hard to beat. The Inspiron that Nick linked to is really nice also.

That would be the HP equivalent of that Gigabyte. I personally wouldn't go for the HP. Don't like the build quality.

15' is the most common, most mainstream. just my opinion :)
And often the better choice, smaller often means compromises .

"more interested in grunt and build quality"
Then get a full size laptop .

Who makes *****. To be honest, its just a name tag with most brands.
All use other peoples parts assembled in other peoples factories . All brands have good & dud models .

Personally , I wouldnt touch a Dell , only because of support issues Ive come across in the past.

1445005 2018-01-18 05:47:00 I would build my own desktop, not a fan of laptops and never have been despite both of us using them at the moment due to not enough room for 2 desktops until later in the year gary67 (56)
1445006 2018-01-18 07:23:00 Hey Allblack! what's your budget? I'm personally using Asus Q524UQ gaming laptop. Its really awesome and slim laptop. I have Asus Q524UQ laptop for the gaming purpose and never disappointed for playing games. One of forum friend suggested me the site where guidance about the gaming laptop under $1000 (www.reviewsdir.com) following the guidance I choose the Asus Q524UQ gaming laptop. I suggest you go through this reference guide before investing in any laptop, this would help you finalize your purchase. Larry Gilmore (17516)

In my opinion Asus is probably right up there in quality computer products. I have a 4 year old Asus laptop that has never missed a beat, and still on the original battery as well.
My desktop also has Asus parts and is getting way past its use by date, running a Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 it has never missed a beat (unlike it's owner, who can't remember how old it actually is!)

I also have had dealings with Acer, sorting out problems for friends, definitely not my cup of tea!

1445008 2018-01-18 17:53:00 I had a Toshiba flappy and it had overheating problems when processing video. Other than that it was OK. I tend to stick with HP, and have never had a problem with the 3 that I have had.
