| 1444811 | 2018-01-14 21:52:00 | With all the hype on global warming we have been led to believe that the large chunks of ice falling off the end of a glacier is because the oceans are warming up. While it cannot be denied that the oceans are warming up, that is not the reason for glacier calving, as it is known. Apparently the reason is because the glacier is expanding. Read all about it here: en.wikipedia.org | Roscoe (6288) | ||
| 1444812 | 2018-01-14 22:02:00 | A quote from the link you posted: 'First order processes are responsible for the overall rate of calving at the glacier scale. The first order cause of calving is longitudinal stretching, which controls the formation of crevasses. When crevasses penetrate the full thickness of the ice, calving will occur. Longitudinal stretching is controlled by friction at the base and edges of the glacier, glacier geometry and water pressure at the bed. These factors, therefore, exert the primary control on calving rate.' These processes are accelerated by an increase in sea temperature Roscoe, and the expansion you mention is of crevasses not ice itself. All of which call into question the point you were attempting to make. :) |

The planet has been considerably warmer and considerably colder in human times. Even in the last 3000 years , we've had periods of much warmer climate , and much colder Warming up is not the disaster its portrayed as , and wasnt in the past. Some countries will benefit hugely with increased food production. One good asteroid or volcano and all bets are off anyway. We'll have year long winters :) |
