1444577 2018-01-09 07:11:00 I had a Redmi 3 (Xiaomi) it might had been toasted after some rain. Never had this issue with other phones. I only used it for a couple of seconds and then back inside my goretex jacket.

Samsung S7 is a bit lesser, both the S7 and S8 as well as other makes are touted as water resistant and might even say can be into 1.5 so meters of water for 15 or 30 seconds. If moisture is found inside these phones is it warrantable? Equally if someone dropped their phone but continues to work but later something else went wrong, could they use that an excuse to not service your phone.

This is unexpected, I don't wanna spend money. I guess the Chinese phones were more cost efficient but might not go that way again. Also looking at the Google Pixel and the Google Pixel 2.

Like to know your thoughts.

Cheers.

I would say, with the ones that claim to be, it depends on how much te retailer and/or manufacturer want to avoid paying out or replacing them.
Then you would likely win in Disputes tribunal if you bring enough evidence.

1444580 2018-01-09 19:25:00 If your phone has a removable battery take it out and leave it to dry for a few days before trying it again. The hot water cupboard is a good place, and putting it in a bag with some dessicant is even better. Some people advocate rice but tests I've seen indicate open air works just as well. Anyway water itself is not particularly harmful, it's only because it's conductive and lets power go where it shouldn't that it damages phonea, that and corrosion if it takes too long to dry.

Many phones have IP ratings now which is a standard that tells you what conditions it should withstand, if a phone could be shown to have failed to meet the standard it would seem like a warranty claim to me. www.rainfordsolutions.com

Will see. Battery is off. Put in a room with a dehumidifier overnight. We have instant gas hot water here.

The phone even without the battery didn't power up or if it did managed, the touchscreen didn't work.

1444582 2018-01-10 05:10:00 Fixed it. Watermarks on a ribbon cable, prob the stylus function. Now all ok.

Side note. This has 3GB RAM. Some others 4GB. I find that regularly I only have 500MB of memory left and have to close the apps down. Is this a common occurrence with Android?

Tends to use the RAM available. Pretty normal. If you didn't look at the memory used, I doubt you'd ever notice an issue, possibly minor slowdown if you had heaps and heaps of apps open at once.

It's too sluggish. If I clear the apps, it becomes 1.2-1.6GB free. I have the 3GB version. I have to keep clearing it a few times a day. It falls down to 500 or 400MB. Sluggish meaning that if you open up an app, it stays there for at least 5 or 10 seconds and does nothing.

1444585 2018-01-24 20:16:00 My Note 5 with the latest android has 4GB of RAM, just checking now it has 1.1 GB free and 433 MB reserved, leaving 2.5 GB used by the system and apps, so yeah it does seem very similar in usage.
Weirdly using the clean option that newer android versions have it claimed to have cleared 0.9 GB of space but only actually gained 0.3 giving me 1.4GB free.

That extra 1GB might be important though, the note 5 is very snappy and responsive still. Or it could be whatever addons or gui extras the manufacturer adds, they can really slow things down.
I've found with android updating is not always a good Idea. I had a Nexus 7 first gen with 1GB of RAM, it ran really well and was a nice tablet until updating to a newer android version effectively killed it. Android like other OSes seems to have gotten more and more resource intensive over the years. One thing that can hurt is anti malware software, can really slow android down.

My smartphone policy for the last couple of purchases has been to wait for a new flagship model to come out and try to get a cheap deal on someone flogging off the previous model when they upgrade. My Note 5 cost me $500 second hand, and I sold my S3 for $250 making it a $250 upgrade and it's been so good I have had no desire to upgrade ever since. You can also get refurbished phones from 1 day and first-in with a limited warranty, high end phones from the last couple of generations are still very nice and better than a lot of cheap models. I'm keeping an eye on those refurbished phones for my next upgrade, some of the S6 and S7 prices are appealing.
