1444564 2018-01-08 23:46:00 I mentioned in January of 2013 and 2017 that there is a conspicuous absence of cicadas and crickets. It's happened again this year. It's very quiet out there.

When I look on Google it says that they live underground for 13 to 17 years then emerge, but there must be many cicadas that go underground at different years as we usually hear them most years, but not this year. Is it the same all over the country or is it only in Auckland?

Any ideas as to why they have not emerged this year?

1444565 2018-01-09 00:18:00 They are all in my head! Have 3 groups in my left ear, and 2 in my right ear, also something like a mains hum. Drives me crazy!
It is strange that there are years with very few Cicadas, they must be fresh batches coming out every year, very unlikely that they would all hibernate at the same time.

1444566 2018-01-09 01:59:00 I have my window open and I can hear Cicadas right now. They like trees, go hiking in the bush and see if you hear some :p Maybe you just tune them out. I had to close my window to be sure I wasn't imagining the noise, it's so normal it barely registers.
Seriously I stopped at a roadside rest stop surrounded by trees and the noise was amazing, almost too loud to take.

1444567 2018-01-09 02:22:00 Couple of summers ago (2?) couldn't sit outside for long as the din was crazy and the backyard was covered in dead cicadas. Dog loved the protein hit.

This year - nothing. Not one.

Maybe because it's Wainui. Come once, never again.

1444570 2018-01-09 07:13:00 I have not heard any down here.

The title of your thread is illogical though.

If something has not happened, it can not have 'happened again' Can it?:D

What I am saying is that the cicadas and crickets did not appear in 2013 and 2017 and this year they have not appeared again. Fairly straightforward I would have thought.

Everyone else made a comment about the absence or otherwise of the cicadas and crickets which is what the thread is about and not about what you think of the title.

Besides, ambiguous means open to or having several possible meanings or interpretations; equivocal.

The title does not have several meanings. It simply means that it has not happened before and it has not happened yet again. Can't see how that is ambiguous.
