1444502 2018-01-07 04:17:00 Microsoft "Kindly" did some updates before Christmas and we effectively lost our network, although all PC's can access the internet (by cable or wireless in the case of the laptops). Having now spent 3 days on it I know I need some help.
Configuration: 2 Desktop PC's, 3 Laptop PC's, a NAS Box and an assortment of printers, smart TV's etc. All PC's run fully up-to-date WIN10. All the assorted items show up on the network. All the PC's can access the NAS box fine (with ethernet cables attached to the laptops). It has taken me many hours for all 5 PC's to see each other but most cannot connect. Error messages are a mixture of wanting a password, saying the accessing PC does not have permission and saying it cannot find the PC - even though it shows up in Explorer. The odd thing is, after all the work I have put in, ALL permissions, ALL security settings and ALL running Services are the same. Yet I get a senario like this:
PC1 - Only fully accesses PC2
PC2 - Doesn't access any
PC3 - Fully accesses PC1/2
PC4 - Doesn't access any
PC5 - Doesn't access any
PC5 by the way, is a brand new (27th December) laptop that is behaving the same as the existing PC's, straight out of the box.
Homegroup is turned off due to none of the PC's being able to connect after the update! Note this is turned-off, via Services, rather than deleted as that was not an option on any of the PC's and none of the 'fixes' I found fixed the problem. I have spent hours on the web and tried all manner of things. I started with only 1 or no other PC's showing on each PC so I have made some progress BUT IT SHOULD NOT BE THIS DIFFICULT - MICROSOFT TO NOTE!!!
All I want are PC's that consistently talk to each other!
I am sure I have missed out vital information. Ask me anything if you think it wll help!
Many Thanks in advance for all replies.

1444503 2018-01-07 04:41:00 In Windows 10 -- You'll need to do this on all of them.

In search type in control Panel Open it. Change the view to Large Icon ( not necessary, I find it just makes things easier) Select Network and sharing -- On the left, select Change Advanced sharing - in the window that opens - expand out All Networks -- Select Turn off Password Protested sharing - Save it. Scroll back up the page - Expand Private - make sure network Discovery is ON & turn on automatic setup ---- is ticked.

Next on the desktop -- either right click "this PC" / Properties, if you have enabled it, or from the control panel -System-- Make sure they are all on the same workgroup - by default W10 uses "Workgroup", change so they are all on the same (if required)

Reboot.

The network may take a few minutes to sort its self out. If devices /computers are still not showing.

From Search type in Network Reset -- Open it, click the reset button, the PC will reboot after 5 minutes, or you can manually reboot once the message appears. When you do it will take a little longer to start, ( JUST WAIT) after a few moments you'll get a pop out asking about sharing, Discovery etc, click YES ( watch for it as its only there a few seconds). Go back into the Control panel and check the network discovery and password protection are NOT on. Change as required from above instructions. :)

Just an after thought, make sure no two (or more) computers have the same network name, they WILL clash and cause all sorts of problems.

1444504 2018-01-07 09:31:00 And some of them maybe on public. The easiest way to change it to private is to click on Homegroup. So you may / will have to enable the Homegroup service

So you can change all of them to private

1444505 2018-01-08 01:10:00 Thank you for your reply Wainuitech. As I said in my post "ALL permissions, ALL security settings and ALL running Services are the same" I re-checked all settings on all machines and all were as decribed by you in the first 2 instruction parragraphs, including all being set to the default WORKGROUP. I then followed your instruction and did a Network Reset on all machines. 2 machines came up with the "Discovery etc. YES, 2 flashed the screen for a split second (literally) and one did not show up at all. "Go back into the Control panel and check the network discovery and password protection are NOT on." This puzzled me at first as if I complied NO other PC's showed up! I then made sure that the Public Network Discovery was off and the Private, on. :)
The upshot of this is that I have 2 more connections, 5 instead of 3 connections yesterday, out of a total of 20 possible. Not counting the NAS box which all can see and write to.
I have checked that all PC's are time synchronised.
I have run advanced IP Scanner and all items on the nextwork show up. There are no IP conflicts.
I have tried disabling Windows Firewall on 2 PC's and this makes no diffecence to their connections (not that there are any connections between these two, my wife's desktop and laptop which she desparately needs to get talking to each other!)
I have run Driver Booster over all machines and all drivers are up-to-date.
Internet access is no problem on any of the machines.

Thanks also to you, Speedy Gonzales, for the reply. All are set to Private, it is not necessary for Homegroup to be running to do this. If it was I would be in even more trouble - see my remark re Homegroup in the original post. Nothing I have done since has changed this, although the re-sets re-enabled Homegroup but only in theory as no pC can join or leave. Turning off Homegroup again in Services made no difference.

My Brain Hurts!

Any suggestions gratefully received.

1444506 2018-01-08 07:20:00 Had that happen many times, they always come back. But to make sure I can get to the Network devices when I want, I have pinned the locations to the start menu, then simply click start - click Device, Opens
Ironically the 4 that give the most trouble are NAS devices, three are linux based, while one is a very old windows server software. From the start menu ( or desktop as described above) they open each and every time.

From what I've read so far,the problem is actually seems to be caused by SAMBA. The following article will explain - as well as give suggestions ( same as I have above)

Theres a very good reply in the following forum /thread, 18th I think down, starts off with :

I see this is marked as Answered but shouldn't be. There is no real answer, there are ways to work around the issue at the moment, but they are only temporary. The Computer Browser service is broken in Windows 10 1703 and is gone from future releases of Windows.

1444507 2018-01-08 21:42:00 If password protected sharing is off, they're on private, the workgroup names are the same

There is no need to set permissions on anything. I've shared a folder on each of these (not the whole hdd), and added everyone and changed this to read/write

Change the workgropup to something else. I found sometimes having these on workgroup, it didnt work. So I changed the workgroup to MSHOME

I wouldnt use 3rd party programs for drivers. It's the lazy way of getting them. And programs like this DON'T always get the right drivers

Not only that, whatever it gets may also crash your system. If it's the wrong driver

1444508 2018-01-08 22:36:00 Hi Wainuitech.

Again, thanks for the reply. I have followed your advice as far as possible and pinned the ones I have found to the start menus of those computers. This comprises my desktop and laptop and our media machine. None of these can access my wife's two machines, neither can either of them access these three or each other. ALL settings are the same. The thread you refered me to had some other suggesytions which I tried.
I started and put on Automatic the two services starting "Function" - this made my laptop visible (for reasons unknown I finished yesterday unable to see it with any other machine).
At the suggestion of Speedy Gonzales I changed the workgroup name on all PC's. This neither helped nor hindered.
Again, the thread you referred me to suggested re-setting the network, netcfg -d DO NOT DO THIS. It had no effect and took me an hour to get back to where I started - almost. Only one machine, my laptop, can now see the NAS box. I have Syncback installed on all PC's and tried the saved syncs on my desktop PC. Thankfully it syncs fine with the NAS even though it no longer shows up in Network.

My Brain still hurts. Any suggestions gratefully received.

1444509 2018-01-08 22:43:00 Hi Speedy Gonzales,

See my reply to Wainuitech. I appreciate your concern re: 3rd party programmes for drivers. I have tried several and found Driver Booster the only one worth having. The ONLY time (in a number of years) that it has let me down is insisting on downloading an incompatible version of Skype. It did this several times (late-on last year) but each time said "incompatible version" when it tried to install. My previous video card manufacturer frequently tried to update with an incompatible driver!

1444510 2018-01-08 23:01:00 Well any 3rd party program can install / get the wrong driver. I wouldnt trust any of them.

Not only that some may also install crap on your system, if youre not careful

1444511 2018-01-08 23:29:00 When you start the computers ( doesn't matter which) how do you sign in ?
1. No password
2. Password
3.pin Number

???????

All the desktop computers here have a password, thats SOLEY so they auto log into one of the servers I have.

If using a pin number change it back to a password instead.

ALSO, just had mine do similar. Now its working perfectly :) can see ALL the computers where as before it only saw 3.

Have a read of the following: www.eightforums.com

Items # 2 and # 7, 8 Did the most damage -- Sorry fix :p

I'm suspecting its a refresh of the DNS Cache that actually sorter it.

Think I'll make a .bat file then when it happens again see if flushing the DNS restores them.
