1444057 2017-12-26 08:37:00 Hi . After upgrading FF to the latest version (sigh) , the icon for website shortcuts (http) has changed to a god awefull
grey & orange thing , ie the FF icon on a grey background. Its yuk

I can change each shortcut separately , but how do I make a global change to change all the web shortcut icons back to the old FF style. ?

FF , upgrade, regret, every time :badpc: :badpc: :badpc:

1444058 2017-12-26 18:46:00 grey? Mine is blue and orange, pretty much the same as the one before.

I have 2, one on desktop, plus it's pinned to start....can you not just amend the one and copy/paste it elsewhere?

1444059 2017-12-26 18:50:00 It can be done, I have to do it each time there is an FF upgrade as each time they revert to the ghastly icon.

It's a bit messy. Main thing is you have to have a pre FF57 copy of Firefox. Then you run an icon extract program to get the original icon. Then you have to replace the current FF icon with the old.

I used Nirsoft Iconextract to get the original icon and Resource Hacker to insert it into the new Firefox.exe

Each time there is a new Firefox.exe you have to do this again.

You also have to rebuild iconcache to get the new icon working, which in itself is a pain :)

1444060 2017-12-26 20:47:00 If anyone wants the original website shortcut icon which had a white background, not the icon for Firefox.exe, ie FF56 and earlier, I've uploaded a copy called FF56whiteicon.ico app.box.com You won't have to go thro' the pain of extraction, just use Resource Hacker to reinsert into FF57.x Terry Porritt (14)
1444061 2017-12-26 21:19:00 This is what I mean, Resource Hacker shows the icons in Firefox, I selected no 8 as its the biggest. It's the icon you get when a shortcut to a website is made. When inserting the new icon just select no5 the smallest, and it automatically replaces 5 to 8. Terry Porritt (14)

Thanks for that .

Honestly, what are they thinking.
The new "Dark" theme as the new default , just awefull . :waughh:
Sure it can be changed, but you have to google how to do it. Many new FF users will just uninstall & go back to chrome, rather than the ugly dark theme.
No way will FF ever pickup market share, most trying FF for the first time & greeted with the new DARK theme .... gaaarh.

Heres what Im talking about, re the icon.It now has a black background. Against a white page its awefull to look at.

1444063 2017-12-26 22:06:00 I've 3 machines Win7, 8.1 and 10 so each time there is an update that gives a new firefox.exe, have to go through the motions of re-inserting the old icon. and also try to remember how to delete iconcache for the different OS

Of course the answer is not have any shortcuts and have a clean desktop :banana

1444064 2017-12-26 22:40:00 Firefox is gone. I threw it away when they stopped supporting FireFTP attachment. It's bad tactics to suddenly remove support for addons that have been used successfully for several years. Opera and Chrome have done a great job for several weeks and I have never looked back. coldot (6847)
1444065 2017-12-26 23:38:00 If you right click on the icon and go to properties (shortcut tab), can you then not just click the "change icon" button (bottom centre) and select the icon without the black background? bevy121 (117)

Thats what i did.
But there are a lot of shortcuts I had to do this for.
I tend to use shortcuts rather than bookmarks. They dont clutter the desktop as they all sit in a few folders on the desktop

If you notice the desktop is all cluttered, it means you arnt using the PC anyway
doing work (or fun) = desktop hidden behind a window , so doesnt matter if desktop is cluttered
