2018-02-22 05:05:00 | How are you Greg? Still eating?Today was the first day in quite a few weeks without too much pain, thanks for asking. Eating... now that's a problem, cos not only are my friends and family giving me a hard time to eat properly, its the hardest thing to do. Swallowing is still lousy. | Greg (193) | |
2018-02-22 06:31:00 | **** Greg, I am sorry to hear this. Although not the same but going through this with my father at the moment. So can understand how your children must feel. You know I have delayed writing this for some time considering how great mates we are. I do wish you all the best. Plod (aaron).

2018-02-22 19:20:00 | Hmmm. my mum isn't eating much either...she's lost heaps of weight. I went intending to cook and freeze and shop and freeze some stuff, but didn't. It's not a too sore or can't be bothered thing. So I left it and didn't nag her. Explain to yours, so they understand. Good to hear the pain is down, I'm sure the docs will crank up the pain pills if you need something better....

2018-02-23 23:30:00 | Good to hear the pain is down, I'm sure the docs will crank up the pain pills if you need something better.... Thanks. My painkillers are as potent as they get.. pure morphine. I'm prescribed two a day, but as I've been told by various folks, just go with what works best. I've been taking them in combination with simple paraetemol and that seems to improve the affect.

2018-02-23 23:34:00 | And thanks to all for your kind comments. Appreciate your comments a lot too, Aaron. Got another pleasant surprise - my third daughter, equally crazy as the other two, has just arrived in Napier. These young women don't have much money between them, but they're sure showing the love... makes me feel very humble.

2018-02-24 03:39:00 | Thanks. My painkillers are as potent as they get.. pure morphine. . That's not the top end at all. Friend has 10mg morphine for her (back) nerve pain. More than twice a day... Morphine is the starter...10mg, 30mg, 60mg etc etc. Then comes: fentanyl, hydromorphone, methadone, oxycodone. Bisphosphonates, such as pamidronate and zoledronic acid, to treat bone pain.

2018-02-24 05:47:00 | That's not the top end at all . Friend has 10mg morphine for her (back) nerve pain . More than twice a day . . . Morphine is the starter . . . 10mg, 30mg, 60mg etc etc . Then comes: fentanyl, hydromorphone, methadone, oxycodone . Bisphosphonates, such as pamidronate and zoledronic acid, to treat bone pain . About thirty years ago I was diagnosed with osteoporosis and they put me on a drug for peri-menopausal women to increase their bone mass if they diagnosed as osteoporotic . Well - I had a scatter-density test and I had a very narrow shadow, so they treated me with IV drips of a bisphosphonate zoledronic acid called:" Reclast" . Gawd did that burn going into my hand every two weeks . They even turned the drip to minimal and it still hurt like the pokers from Hell being shoved up my arm . Three years of that treatment and I got better and better scatter density tests so they took me off the Reclast and I am on calcium and D3 every day . I never experienced any pain from the osteo - the docs said there is no pain - just sudden breaking of things like hips and fingers and toes . Currently I am on a pantheon of drugs to keep me alive and functional . Pantoprozole (2x/day - AM/PM) Lyrica (2x/day - AM/PM) Finisteride (1x/day - AM) Simvistatin (2x/day - AM/PM) Warfarin (1x/day - nightly) Alfuzosin (1x/day - PM) Ranitidine (1x/day - PM) Rosuvastatin (1x/day - PM) Tramadol (PRN) Ibuprofen (800MG, 1x/day - AM & PRN) Darvon (PRN) Calcium Carbonate (1x/day - AM) Vitamin D3 (1x/day - AM) Vitamin B Complex (1x/day - AM) Baby Aspirin (1x/day - PM) So - as you can see, I rattle when I walk and if the VA weren't paying for these, I'd be broke - er, broker than I am! We just gotta do what we gotta do . . . getting old is not a picnic . What I DO know is that if I knew earlier-on that I'd live this long, I'd have taken better care of my teeth . That's a big regret . We should get together and compare surgery scars . Don't bother - I win! :devil

2018-02-27 00:39:00 | I remember getting an operation on my stomach, for pain relief I had these little triangular pills that were green, in all honest in what I thought was a few days turned out to be months, I have no idea what they were but I seem to think I had an amazing time at the hospital hahahaha Even got prescriptions to drink flavoured milk which was cool at first, but after a few weeks was like anything else, you soon get sick of it. Hope things get more comfortable Greg, take care. | rob_on_guitar (4196) | |
2018-02-27 01:00:00 | bisphosphonate Pantoprozole (2x/day - AM/PM) Lyrica (2x/day - AM/PM) Finisteride (1x/day - AM) Simvistatin (2x/day - AM/PM) Warfarin (1x/day - nightly) Alfuzosin (1x/day - PM) Ranitidine (1x/day - PM) Rosuvastatin (1x/day - PM) Tramadol (PRN) Ibuprofen (800MG, 1x/day - AM & PRN) Darvon (PRN) Calcium Carbonate (1x/day - AM) Vitamin D3 (1x/day - AM) Vitamin B Complex (1x/day - AM) Baby Aspirin (1x/day - PM) You know, there are a number of doctors who don't agree with this sort of thing . They say people are over medicated, especially the elderly . There is this obsession, often requested by the patients as well, that they must have a pill for everything . Then another to counter a side effect, which then gives another side effect and so on . Explain why animals do so well without endless tests and medications to "prevent" things . They are living longer now as well . Bisphosphonates such as risedronate (Actonel), ibandronate (Boniva), alendronate (Fosamax) and zoledronic acid (Reclast) Intended to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss and bone disease in adults, Bisphosphonates have been linked to esophageal cancer and chronic irregular heartbeat, among other side effects . Introduced in 1995, this drug was hailed as the superior treatment for the some 40 million Americans who have or are at risk for osteoporosis and Pagets disease of bone, which causes severe bone loss . Worse yet, some claim that they have been prescribed to thousands of people who dont need it . Early on, the drugs manufacturer, Merck, opened its nonprofit Bone Research Institute as an opportunity to broaden the drugs reach . With it, the company was not only able to reach the osteoporosis market, but also convinced medical professionals that osteopenia needed treatment as well . Before these treatments, osteopenia, which is a slight thinning of the bones, was rarely diagnosed or treated . Today, treatment for osteopenia patients remains controversial . Over the years, Merck has been rebuked several times by the U . S . Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for falsely advertising the benefits . Within years of them entering the market, patients started reporting a host of medical problems associated with them In view of these awful drug side effects, when you are faced with decisions about your bone health, it is critical you take a step back and look at all your options . A magical once-yearly infusion might sound tempting . In the end bisphosphonates alter normal bone metabolism and sacrifices long-term results for temporary benefits . And worse yet, they do so by stopping the production of osteoclasts necessary for future osteoblast production and bone remodeling . Doctors agenda is that patients at high risk for fracture should receive pharmacologic therapy . However, serious complications, including acute systemic inflammatory reaction, ocular inflammation, renal failure, nephrotic syndrome, electrolyte imbalance, and osteonecrosis of the maxilla and mandible have all been increasingly reported . In addition to an occasional inflammatory reaction seen at the infusion site, acute systemic inflammatory reactions, characterized by fever, myalgia, arthralgia, nausea, vomiting, and edema are commonly observed after intravenous administration of bisphosphonates . CLINICAL TRIALS Clinical trials for bisphosphonate drugs have shown that they're only marginally effective at preventing hip fractures even in high-risk postmenopausal women . What's more, a systematic review of 33 studies of bisphosphonate drugs published last year by the highly respected Therapeutics Initiative found "no statistically significant reduction in hip or wrist fracture" in women with no previous fractures or vertebral compression who make up the majority of women treated with bisphosphonates . ABOUT BISPHOSPHONATES Bisphosphonates are a class of drugs that prevent the loss of bone mass such as osteoporosis and similar diseases . They are the most commonly prescribed drugs used to treat osteoporosis Bisphosphonates are recommended as a first line treatments for post-menopausal osteoporosis The bisphosphonate alendronate reduces the risk of hip, vertebral, and wrist fractures by 35-39%; zoledronate reduces the risk of hip fractures by 38% and of vertebral fractures by 62 After five years of medications by mouth or three years of intravenous medication, bisphosphonate treatment can be stopped Adverse effects Oral bisphosphonates can cause upset stomach and inflammation and erosions of the esophagus . Intravenous bisphosphonates can also give fever and flu-like symptoms after the first infusion . Bisphosphonates, when administered intravenously have been associated with osteonecrosis of the jaw . (Osteonecrosis is a disease caused by reduced blood flow to bones in the joints . With too little blood, the bone starts to die and breaks down . ) A number of cases of severe bone, joint, or musculoskeletal pain have been reported . Recent studies have reported bisphosphonate use as a risk factor for atrial fibrillation in women . (Atrial fibrillation is an irregular and often rapid heart rate that can increase risk of stroke or heart failure) In large studies, women taking bisphosphonates for osteoporosis have had unusual fractures in the femur (thigh bone) in the shaft of the bone . However, these unusual fractures are rare compared to the common hip fractures . There are concerns that long-term bisphosphonate use can result in over-suppression of bone turnover . It is hypothesized that micro-cracks in the bone are unable to heal and eventually unite and propagate, resulting in atypical fractures . Such fractures tend to heal poorly . Other side effects: Low levels of calcium in your blood (hypocalcaemia) Bone and joint pain Changes in your bowel movements (constipation or diarrhoea) Tiredness and low energy levels Feeling sick Bisphosphonates can cause damage to your kidneys you will need to have regular blood tests to check how well your kidneys are working WHY THEY ARE PRESCRIBED Osteoporosis is a disease where decreased bone strength increases the risk of a broken bone . It is the most common reason for a broken bone among the elderly . Doctors agenda is that patients at high risk for fracture should receive pharmacologic therapy . Bone loss increases after menopause due to lower levels of estrogen . Osteoporosis becomes more common with age . About 15% of white people in their 50s and 70% of those over 80 are affected . It is more common in women than men . Key risk factors for osteoporosis include genetics, lack of calcium and vitamin D, history of rheumatoid arthritis, low body weight, and family history of osteoporosis . Prevention of osteoporosis includes a proper diet during childhood and efforts to avoid medications that can cause the condition . Children and teenagers should ensure adequate calcium and vitamin D in their diets: 1 . Cheese, Yogurt and Milk 2 . Salmon and sardines canned with their soft bones 3 . Dark leafy greens like spinach, kale, turnips 4 . Almonds, Brazil nuts, sunflower seeds, tahini, and dried beans Vitamin is also obtained from sunlight Between September and April, sun protection is recommended between 10am and 4pm . A daily walk or some other form of outdoor physical activity in the early morning or late afternoon is recommended . Between May and August, some sun exposure is important . A daily walk or another form of outdoor physical activity around the middle of the day is recommended .
