2018-01-11 08:48:00 | Just a quick note. You are making a rod for your own back trying to make changes to every comp at the same time. Just try to get two accessing shares between them. That way the labour and confusion drops markedly. Discovery method. Run File Explorer then click Network, lower left. This will get the networked comps displayed. Now rt click a header, e.g. Category, and you will see a box to tick for Discovery method.

2018-01-11 09:10:00 | OP, is this "dialog box with 2 fields to fill, User ID and password, and a tick box for save settings" labelled "Enter network credentials"? What about this one, "but it came up with Name or Password Incorrect". Is this box labelled Enter network credentials?

2018-01-11 09:18:00 | Hi Wainuitech, A reply to the 6.43pm message. As per suggestion from linw I fixed the IP addresses so have them written down. Have just pinged C2 & C4 from C1. Both working fine. Or are now I should say, I had disconnected the cable from C2 at first and it defaulted to wireless. A check with advanced IP scanner showed a different IP - I assume that this is normal. Should I set a fixed IP on wireless? And would it have to be the same as the cabled IP, bearing in mind that if the cable is connected the wireless is disconnected so I assume no conflict would be seen. I've been up since 5am so will call it a day now and get onto your video tomorrow morning. Many thanks for the replies. Hi linw - Many thanks to you to, I'll go over your posts in the morning also.

2018-01-11 09:30:00 | WT, some of us have heaved Adobe Flash Player!! Use a different browser then ;) The site and the recording program is the one who uses Flash not me. W10 / Edge will play flash by default. Connecting Via cable then wireless will give you a different IP address. Pays to stick to one method because if the IP keeps changing that's often when problems begin. On saying that the only computers here that have a static IP are the NAS's and servers.

2018-01-11 18:14:00 | Hi Wainuitech & Linw Linw - "File Explorer if you click on Network, Rt Click on a column heading, then select Discovery Method (tick)." Sorry about querying this, it is so basic I got myself confused. This was already set up this way. Linw - "Enter network credentials?" Yes in both cases Wainuitech - Thanks for the video re: sharing and permissions. Other than the C drives, all drives on all PC's were already set up this way prior to my starting this thread Linw - "Just a quick note. You are making a rod for your own back trying to make changes to every comp at the same time." Comment noted. This morning I have been trying to get my desktop and laptop properly talking to each other. From my desktop I get "Windows cannot access \\DAVIDS-LAPTOP" Several things tried this morning have made no difference. Both of you - Linw you have had me turn on password sharing - Wainuitech, you say it should be off. I am confused! With it off I do appear to be going a bit backwards. I would appreciate from one of you a reply to my question in my post of 5.14pm yesterday re: settings in Advanced Sharing. When I originally started this thread they were all the same but I susect that they aren't now. I am an amateur at this but not a novice. My company bought it's first PC in 1984 and I, running the more technical side of the company, learned how to manage it and subsequent PC's. I have set up 4 company networks and have built or re-built (as a hobby) probably in excess of 100 PC's. But I admit that I am now way out of date. Having said that, these problems are nuts!

2018-01-11 19:24:00 | Both of you - Linw you have had me turn on password sharing - Wainuitech, you say it should be off. I am confused! The Idea behind that setting is when you are accessing a share, if password protection is ON, then you will be prompted to enter a user name and password to allow access. With Password OFF - it should be straight in, open to anyone on the LAN with no restrictions. Generally on a home or trusted LAN, open is fine. One company I do IT work for, their file server is like that, everyone has access to two folders, they all upload photos and documents, and others can then use them when required in their work. If you are getting prompted for a user name and password, then enter in the username and password for the persons computer you are trying to get into (not your user name or password) If you wanted to use your own, then in the shared folder you are trying to access you need to put your details in the permissions. This is where it can get "interesting" as you are now using the same technology as a server. To add to the last bit, this also depends on if you are running windows 10 home or professional. Home doesn't have all the same settings (for group permissions etc) as professional does. One other thing that can give major problems -- What Security software are you using ?? Sometimes that needs to be setup to allow network traffic esp if it contains a firewall. If that software is out of date or damaged it can cause all sorts of problems. Sometimes if things simply don't work like they should, even when all the settings are right - I rip out the security. Its amazing how many times the problem disappears after that ;) Once you get things working without security, then you can try putting it back. If it plays up again you know where the problem is. Simply turning it off is not good enough, it has to be removed.

2018-01-12 00:32:00 | Hi Wainuitech - we are making some progress. All are running the Home edition. The PC's used a mixture of AVG & Avast (Free versions), together with Malwarebytes. I have stripped out AVG & Avast and reverted to Windows Defender and Malwarebytes. I am very reluctant to strip it out entirely. I was already using Windows Firewall on all pC's. I have checked and where necessary brought Defender up-to-date. I have also re-set all the "Advanced Network Configurations" to the same settings and have left password sharing on as I get better connections. Ticking "save password" seems to maintain log-ons through re-boots. C1 connects to C3 & C5 (cannot see others) C2 connects to C3 & C5 (cannot see others) C3 connects to C5 (cannot see others) C4 connects to C1, C3 & C4 (can see but not connect to C2) It is also now the only PC that shows the NAS box! (But AlwaysSync software still connects, hopefully on all) C5 connects to C3 (cannot see others except C2) That's one connection up on yesterday and, importantly, C4 is connecting to C5 (my wife's desktop and laptop) When trying to connect to C2 (my laptop) from 2 PC's (C4/5) I get a report of DHCP not running. I checked and it is, and all the services that depend on this are also running. If I run Ntwork Troubleshooter and try to find C2 on machines that do not show it in File Explorer I eventually get the same message. I'm out of things to try.
