Thanks again. 2 PC = No Password, 2 PC = Password, my wife's new laptop is using her fingerprint but, until we got this sorted, was also set to use a pin, which is what I have been using as it would be unforgiveable to cut her finger off! :) I can try what you suggest but note that previously the network worked with 2 = no password and 3 = password. I will also try the static IP and DNS flushing. I will get back to this forum when I have tried these.

1444513 2018-01-09 07:45:00 The problem is related to SMB1 so it seems. Its been removed from the latest version. Looking at the insider builds ( months ahead of public releases) none of the installs have teh saem problem. This PC I'm on now, tried to get all the devices to show -- NO GO. BUt what did work was this.

Open the Ethernet Connection adapter -- oh Hell easier to show you -- Follow the cursor as I work through, ( I'm moving slowwww, on purpose, normally it would be a LOT faster darting about) change the last setting. Its shown as default. After that reboot, all the computers showed after refreshing the network.

Start from the control Panel ----- Change the netbios settings

Another wasted few hours (no offence meant of course!)
I followed your suggestion/video and achieved nothing, although at least I did not go backwards.
Out of desperation I re-activated the services for Homegroup, then did a search as to how to fix the problem of being unable to join or delete a Homegroup. I found this fix: answers.microsoft.com (note you may have to activate 'view hidden files' to use this fix). This worked for 266 people but not for me. Although it did get rid of asking me to join the previous unobtainable Homegroup. I set up a new Homegroup on my desktop PC. After restarting them all the other machines said that there was a Homegroup they could join and I tried on all of them. None of them would connect and, yes, I did get the password right. Now for something really bizare, after a re-boot, my desktop PC is showing the homegroup I set up but is also inviting me to join another home group. This is despite all 5 PC's having all their idstore files deleted (see thread referred to above) before the new Homegroup was set up! What's more, it is saying that the Homegroup is set up on a PC that has not been on our system for at least a decade! (This in not the same PC it was referencing before we stated this thread, which has only been gone about a year). My desktop and laptop are now not talking to each other!

1444515 2018-01-10 03:13:00 I hesitate to step into a complicated networking situation such as this, especially if WT has been involved!

However, I have been successfully sharing between 4 win 10 comps (3 X FCU and 1 X Insider) since MS put back netbios discovery!

I have re-read this thread but can't see exactly what error messages you are getting.

I don't use a homegroup as I get by well without it.

Win 10 uses netbios for discovery, but as you can see the other comps, netbios with computer browser must be working OK. You can see the discovery method in File Explorer if you click on Network, Rt Click on a column heading, then select Discovery Method (tick).

The next settings I find absolutely necessary here is to set up the credentials in Credential Manager in Control Panel. Select Windows Credentials and add the computer name plus userid and password. These credentials give your comp permission to login into the other comp to access the shares. This, of course, means all user logins must use a password. The finger swipe is just an alternative to the password, just like the Pin number on this comp, so that should not require carrying the finger across the room!!

If you already have credentials set up, please forgive me, but I saw no reference to that being the case.

Just try this on one of the recalcitrant ones to test. Good luck.

1444516 2018-01-10 04:09:00 Hi Linw, your reply is much appreciated. I have had enogh of this for today (for life in fact!) but will have a go tomorrow morning. Credentials are not set up.
Since my last post I have again followed the procedure described in the thread referenced on my last post. The reference to the decade old Homegroup has gone and I have managed to set one up. Unfortunately this only lets my desktop PC and media machine talk to each other. The other 3 PC's cannot join, although all machines can see each other in explorer (most of the time) but I only have my laptop connecting to my desktop under the workgroup.
Error Messages differ. Cannot Find / Cannot log on / Pops up with a screen requiring name/password log-on (but only once has this actually worked in the last 5 days I have been wrestling with this nightmare)

1444517 2018-01-10 04:19:00 The largest problem with homegroup is many devices ( NAS's, some servers, and OS's for example) wont work. Most NAS software is some form of Linux, which doesn't work in Homegroup. You need Windows 7 onwards. wainuitech (129)

I have spent most of another day on this. There is a little progress but not much.

I have, VERY VERY carefully, put the use ID's and passwords into each of the 5 PC's (subsequently all have been re-checked). I then closed all PC's and the router down. Upon re-booting all this is the position:
C1 sees C2/C3/C5 but can only connect to C3
C2 sees C1/C3/C5 but can only connect to C1 & C3
C3 sees ALL but can only connect to C1
C4 sees ALL but can only connect to C1 & C3
C5 sees C1/C2/C3 but can only connect to C1 & C3
This is double the number of PC's talking to each other as yesterday but still not good enough and two critical ones, C4 & C5 will not talk to each other in either direction. When first asked to connect there is a dialog box with 2 fields to fill, User ID and password, and a tick box for save settings. All the above connections managed to connect this way and have saved their settings through re-boots (ie. no further log-on required). Where a PC could be seen, but I am showing it as not connected, I initially mostly got the same dialog box but it came up with "Name or Password Incorrect." Subsequent tries came up with a dialog box asking for password only and, of course, the correct password would not let me in.
I have looked at Services in each machine and all required network related services do seem to be running. Under "Change Advanved Sharing Options" I have tried all sorts of likely/unlikely combinations (re-booting each time even if the dialogs do not ask me to) and still I cannot make a connection. I would appreciate guidance as to what the correct settings should be (as there are 2 answers for each of 8 sections (top or bottom), a list of 8 T or B answers would save a lot of typing :)
I have turned off Homegroup to avoid complcations.
The most puzzling PC is C4, my wife's desktop PC as this is about as 'standard' as you can get (ASUS motherboard, Intel Chip). C2/C3/C5 are all laptops but all are plugged into an ethernet cable. I have just thought to try my laptop on wireless and I get the same connections - and lack of! It crossed my mind that C5 might be having problems as it only connects to a cable using an adaptor on a USB3 port but C2 has an Ethernet port and is displaying the same problems.
I've had enough for yet another day.
Any replies/suggestions VERY gratefully received.

1444520 2018-01-11 05:43:00 Sharing can be a funny thing on some computers ( not just W10) Meaning if you dont share fully then you wont get anywhere.

So back to basics. On the PC's that are having connection problems. On One open a cmd ( from search), type in ipconfig get its IP address ( forget about the gateway) It will give a set of numbers (IP) maybe something like 192.168.1.XXX With x being a number. EACH PC MUST have a different IP address ( last numbers)

The on another PC go to CMD, open and Ping the previous IP Eg: ping 192.168.1.xxx you should get a reply x4.

Assuming you do come back and advise. Its dinner time so Have to stop, but I'll post a link on how to share a folder correctly/fully so it can be seen and accessed.

1444521 2018-01-11 07:07:00 Okay, here's how to share fully - As long as password protected sharing is turned off, its standard basic folder sharing in windows (its based on basic server technology incorporated several editions ago, servers have had these permissions for years - NOT homegroup) The folders shown are the shared folders on this PC, if you notice the example its set to allow everyone full access, if you wanted to allow only certain people or wanted password protecting then its slightly different.

You'll notice that even after the first sharing ( which is all most people do) its still not visible, BUT the moment the permissions are applied, it automatically populates and shows, no refresh nuttin :)

If yours still are not showing then there could be some sort of corruption or settings not right someplace else. OR you are trying to share folders in a location that windows doesn't like, and blocks.

To start, right click the folder you want to share -Properties -----------
