1444069 2018-01-02 00:05:00 Why not just tuck the shortcut to Firefox somewhere and make a new desktop shortcut to it? You can then use any icon you like. Jayess64 (8703)

It isn't the shortcut to firefox.exe that is the problem, that doesn't change. It's shortcuts to websites that with FF 57 have changed to black.
If you want to globally change all such shortcuts, then the black shortcut has to be replaced with the original white background shortcut. Any new and existing shortcuts will then use the replaced icon, thus obviating having to manually keep changing black icons.

I didn't make myself clear. I mean make a shortcut to the website shortcut, then you can choose an icon you want to use. I grumbled about the need to do this in the "Win10 is s***" thread, but at least it does the trick.

1444072 2018-01-02 04:54:00 Ah, I see. That is the easiest way especially if the desktop is kept tidy with not too many icons floating around. You'd still have to change them again when there is a Firefox update as the icons will be refreshed from iconcache. Terry Porritt (14)

Not so sure about that - I've been doing this for a while now and haven't noticed any problems with Firefox updates.

I'll try your method out on a couple of shortcuts, one with a new icon and one with the Firefox white background icon, but using the one I extracted and saved so that it doesn't come from within Firefox.exe, and see what happens at the next update :)

I'm a bit puzzled here. I am on Firefox 57.0.3 64-bit, and however I try, I only get the same icon: the Firefox logo on a transparent background. I have never seen the dark background that is causing the bother. Are the icons for 64-bit & 32-bit Firefox different?

1444076 2018-01-02 23:26:00 For historical reasons I'm stuck with 32 bit OS until I buy a new 64 bit OS, the Firefox 57.0.3 I use is therefore 32 bit. There could be a difference in the icons, I don't know, but mine revert to as shown by 1101 in post#6 whenever there is an update. Terry Porritt (14)
