1445486 2018-01-27 23:09:00 Daughter comes in with a flash new laptop.
SWMBO has a go with it & says this doesn't get hot like my one does.
So there was a slight hint in my direction to replace the current 10 year old model.
SWMBO's needs are a bit different to daughters, so I spent yesterday arft compiling a short list.
Not looking very promising either, so thought I'd share it with you guys.

I started with a budget of $1000
Screen 13'' - 15''
CPU 2.0 GHz +
Ram 4 GB +
SSD 250 GB +
OS Win 10 H X64

From the current listings on PriceSpy found only three with those specs & only one available.

Any comments or advice appreciated.

1445487 2018-01-27 23:41:00 The SSD is often the governing factor in price. You could get a higher spec for the same price if it had a std HDD.

One thing to look out for (had MANY customers trip up on this) some Laptops don't have an Optical driver these days (one linked doesn't). This means if you have software that only came on a CD/DVD and you cant download it you need to either use an external Optical Drive or another Computer to transfer the contents to a USB drive.

1445488 2018-01-28 00:04:00 Funnily enough, I've also been investigating laptops, never had one before, except a very old Thinkpad I used as a monitor tester, and after a lot of searching, confusion, and not being a gamer came up with a Lenovo Thinkpad.

"Lenovo ThinkPad L470 20J5 - Core i5 7200U / 2.5 GHz - Win 10 Home 64-bit - 8 GB RAM - 256 GB SSD TCG Opal Encryption - 14" 1366 x 768 (HD) - HD Graphics 620 - Wi-Fi, Bluetooth - black".................. $1047

The price won't be bettered, I don't think.

Be interesting to hear what Wainui thinks of it as a general purpose non gaming machine.

1445489 2018-01-28 00:57:00 Yeah I noticed several with 500 GB or even 1TB in that range but we want to get away from moving parts.

The daughter's actually had a SSD 500 & was only about $500 but the screen wasn't much bigger than my tablet.

We may have to extend the budget.

Lenovo's have been about for years, mainly as a business class laptop, only recently have they gone into the cheaper consumer market. This model is listed under Commercial, my suppliers don't deal with the cheaper consumer.

From my supplier;
8666

They also have another, similar spec's but with a higher resolution 1920X1080 bit more expensive of course.

The price-- ;) depends.

1445492 2018-01-28 02:41:00 Extending the Budget made a big difference.
Here is my top 5.
