1444592 2018-01-09 20:21:00 New Zealanders who think selling golliwogs is OK "need a wake-up call", the Human Rights Commission says.

Golliwogs not harmless, never have been - Human Rights Commission.

These headlines appeared on Facebook recently.

Some of the comments are: What about all the white/pink dolls how come no one is taking offence to them Wake up Human Rights Commission and stop stirring sh*t.

What a load of rubbish! Of course golliwogs are harmless, just as harmless as any other doll. Golliwogs have been around for many generations and it's only in the PC era that people have become outraged. But have you noticed? It's the white PC brigade that are being outraged, not the blacks. Has anyone asked them what they think? I thought not.

What do you think? If golliwogs are harmful, what about Barbie? Should we ban her as well? And what about maori dolls? Where will this end?

1444593 2018-01-09 20:46:00 I think it's because Golliwog was used as a derogatory racist term by many at one point, so the dolls were associated with that. Kids don't know that, and only know what they are taught so there's no need for anyone to be offended by the dolls really.
Maybe they should just rename them to keep the PC brigade happy.

Once a negative message get's associated with something it seems like nobody will ever let it go. Like the swastika for example, the Nazis didn't invent the symbol and weren't the first to use it but because they used it and did such horrible things that particular shape has become forever associated with them in the western world. Good luck convincing someone it's a spiritual Buddhist symbol you are displaying as an example.

Whatever it is, be it language, a symbol, or a doll, things only have the meaning we assign to them it's not inherent. If people get offended it's often because they choose to be. Intent can be/should be far more offensive than the item itself.

1444594 2018-01-09 20:48:00 I'm sick and tied of the PC brigade pushing their agendas and expecting everyone to fall in line with their stupid thinking. They should get a life and leave us all alone before we cut their throats I say. Bryan (147)

Totally agree. I couldn't have said it better myself.

This type of bullying is the first step toward the sort of thing we saw in Germany in the 1930s.
You should be ashamed of your intolerance, not crowing about it!

Quite agree. I don't like to be told what to think. I'm quite capable of making up my own mind and I think that golliwogs are harmless as are all dolls.

1444598 2018-01-09 21:49:00 They are not harmless as they foster racist stereotyping.

You are all revealing your racism and general intolerance.
Shameful and unacceptable in todays world (or at any time actually)

1444599 2018-01-09 21:54:00 For once KarameaDave you have it wrong. I'm not the bully. It's the PC brigade that are the bullies attempting to ram their ideals down our throats knowing that we do not retaliate and they can get away with it. It is they who are like those in Germany in the 1930s'. Bryan (147)
1444600 2018-01-09 22:09:00 I disagree Bryan but you are entitled to your opinion, as we all are.

A large number of people in the UK agree with you.

So what about white and pink dolls and maori dolls? Do they foster racist stereotyping as well? Should they be banned as well, along with Barbie dolls? You need to be consistent.
