1443771 2017-12-18 07:02:00 Hi all,

My ADSL internet connection has been causing me grief over several weeks. Chorus has come and gone several times. Currently I am switching between two different modems to prove it is (or not) a faulty modem. I also have interference noise intermittently on the analogue phone line which makes me suspect it isn't a modem fault. As the network problem is intermittent, I would like to monitor the connections over a long period to compare the two modems. Pinging doesn't cut the mustard and the modem logs are not that great.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a program (PC - Windows 10) to run which records drop outs over a 24 hour (at least) period?

Thanks. :)

Maybe traceroute?

What are you trying to show?

1443773 2017-12-18 07:30:00 I want to show over a 24 hour period there were no connectivity drop off or 100 drop offs. Ping doesn't retain a history that I can analyse and the summary at the end only shows the ping stats. I want to see if there is a pattern (time of day) with the drop offs.

Ping statistics for 8.8.8.8:
Packets: Sent = 106, Received = 95, Lost = 11 (10% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 66ms, Maximum = 81ms, Average = 67ms

BTW, that ping stat is only a few minutes old and I got dropped while trying to post this.

1443774 2017-12-18 07:49:00 I run smokeping on my gateway which gives latency graphs and dropped packet counts.

You might find something suitable here - alternativeto.net

1443775 2017-12-18 08:02:00 Thanks - installed PingPlotter and using the Pro version with the two week free trial. Jen (38)

1443777 2017-12-18 09:10:00 PingPlotter is doing the trick. Managed to catch a spot of bad behaviour with the spare (old) modem:

Will leave it running overnight before switching back to the original modem - it tended to predominantly show the problem, which is why I needed to capture the old modem with same problem. Then it is another phone call to support ... :badpc:
Jen (38)
1443778 2017-12-18 19:25:00 That display looks to be doing the trick.

Noise on the phone must be a red flag, though, surely?

Keep us posted.

1443779 2017-12-19 05:59:00 So left the original (Netcomm) modem logging today and it looks pretty hopeless:

Called Actrix and I have to say I am pretty impressed by their customer service. Answers straight away and they have knowledgeable call centre people. :) However, they are reluctant to call back Chorus when their last report said no further faults found. Doing some more testing involving moving both the modems to a different phone jack in the house repeat the logging trick and trying another isolation test with the phone only when it crackles. Also going to ask the neighbours if they have any problems. Failing all that, I have been advised to call an electrician to check the ETP and wiring in the house. Getting/finding a tradie around this time of the year should be interesting.

1443780 2017-12-20 05:29:00 OK, back again!

Discovered that the phone crackling only occurs when a modem is plugged in. Unplug the modem and the noise ends. Both modems do this from two different phone jacks. What does that mean?
