701090 2008-08-28 22:41:00 I have acquired a book entitled, "When Steam Was King," by the famous railway photographer and painter W . W . Stewart .

It was part of the Thames High School library (withdrawn) and is a bit tatty but in reasonable condition . It was published by A . H . & A . W . Reed in 1970 .

A small square of paper has been affixed to the first page which has a drawing of a small locomotive (looks a bit like a single Fairlie) on the top half with his signature underneath .

Signed copies of books usually command a better price, do they not?

Any idea if it has any value and approximately how much?

I am a book lover myself and I used to recover and redo old books like that. I tried to find out how big a market we have in NZ for older first editions and limited editions - no luck, but checking Trademe and Ebay may possibly give you some indication - seeing that it is a steam engine book.

Unfortunately, I do not think that it is either a first or limited edition - just a signed one.

As you say, it may be an idea to look at TradeMe or Ebay although being a New Zealand book I would not expect to see it on Ebay.
