2008-09-03 23:02:00 | Will they still have ADSL available? probably. Will it come down in price? I hope so... I don't know what kind of speeds fibre would bring - but obviously faster. I guess this means ISPs would need to have bigger data limits so you don't use them so fast, which would mean higher price, as no matter what connection you have at home, the international connection still needs to go through that big undersea pipe - correct?

2008-09-04 03:03:00 | Would be better if they spent the money a a new international cable first. No point in having fibre if most servers are still slow due to an overcrowded connection out of the country. | stormdragon (6013) | |
2008-09-04 03:17:00 | Just because sites are slow to load, doesn't mean the SCC is running out of room. ISPs buy a certian amount of bandwidth, and don't really want to spend more just to ease the afternoon rush. The SCC people should be held accountable. | ubergeek85 (131) | |

2008-09-04 03:33:00 | The Head Of Telstra Clear says National's plan to get fibre optic cable to most homes is a waste of money. We will probably just d/l more movies. They're probably right. Even your poll isn't asking about homes - you ask: View Poll Results: Will Fibre to the home really help NZ ? 1)Yes I think it will help businesses get ahead Fibre to the business district is another thing.

2008-09-04 06:05:00 | Hi Guys The Head Of Telstra Clear says National's plan to get fibre optic cable to most homes is a waste of money. We will probably just d/l more movies. Will it help New Zealand or should we spend the money on other things What do you think ? Telstra are the biggest hypocrites. They are only saying that because they have currently got a monopoly on fibre optic cable internet in NZ, so the installation of a competing network that other ISPs can hop onto, will negatively effect them. Didn’t they also recently say that NZ needed to be unbundled, to allow for faster internet speeds, and that our current speeds meant that NZs was losing money economically? This is why the government ended up unbundling, to allow for competitors to setup faster networks. Personally I think it is the future, as all services such as HiDef TV will be delivered on it, and Telstra is very backwards to make such a statement.

No point in having fibre if most servers are still slow due to an overcrowded connection out of the country. Thats not needed, if the content is delivered locally. Eg a pay TV station delivering content from it's station in Auckland, to Wellington. The current international cable is plenty big enough, and we don't really need to duplicate infrastructure, as NZers will end up paying in the end anyway. The only reason I could see a need for another cable is for redundacny |

2008-09-04 07:32:00 | North Power are putting right past our place here in Whangarei :punk Telstra are going to be selling the connections to homes. Should be available by the end of the year. Yeah that shows how much of a hippocrite that Telstra Clear guy is. And as another poster said they could suffer if other ISPs had fibre in Wellington and Christchurch. I hope John Key does not listen to them. Also we should not listen to Telstra Clear, because they have been hot and cold over New Zealand for the last 20 years. It all depends on how much money they are making in OZ and as to whether they can bothered to worry about us over here.
