2009-10-26 22:06:00 | Be careful.. I had a customer try in vain to get the extended warranty honered, no NZ contact for the ext warrnty enquiries. Turns out it was run through an Aus insurance company...(but sold by a major NZ retail store) She ended up having to take the printer back to the retailer & really start kicking up a stink, demanding a full refund etc.

2009-12-13 21:30:00 | Hi Guys, I've have a different opinion on these warranties. I worked at Noel Leeming for a few years. Yes the warranties benefit the company and the salespeople. The salespeople get a commission which would help pay for games or their childrens education (whichever applies) However the cost of these warranties are usually cheaper than the cost of a repair, especially on notebooks. I bought a warranty for my Toshiba laptop, 14 months later the screen went. Had it fixed no questions asked (replaced entire lid) 3 months later I had another problem. Again fixed with no questions asked. I even saw a guy come in with a laptop with its lid broken off after being dropped (not usually covered by extended warrantee) We sent it away anyway and to our surprise it was covered and returned 2 weeks later! I'm pretty sure the CGA doesn't state how long a particular product should last. I've seen people try to get covered through the CGA and believe me, its a long, painful experience and in the meantime you have no computer to use! And then there's no guarantee of a happy ending. How much is your time worth? If you never use the warranty, great! You're lucky enough to get a product that lasts as long as you would expect. Unfortunately in todays disposable society, things just aren't made to last like they used too. I guess companies could spend more time on quality control and more robust components, but then the price increases would probably surpass the cost of a 3rd party warranty anyway. Another benefit is if you want to upgrade and sell you computer, you can get a lot more for it if there is a year or 2 left on the warranty (NL Warrantees are transferable) Weigh up the pros and cons but don't rely on the CGA for backup, its just not as simple as most would assume. | Liddle_Razkal (15373) | |

I have a credit card I use solely for purchases like these, as the credit card company doubles the manufacturer's warranty for free. personally I prefer to be able to wangle a better deal by paying cash etc, you're not likely to be able to get the best deal you can by putting on the plastic |

2009-12-13 22:07:00 | Personally I think that the HN 5 year warranty is a money making exercise for Harvey Norman. Owned Macs for 5 years and no problems, never considered the Applecare plans. No other computer manufacturer expects their products to crap out within a short period, so why should you expect an Apple one to ? IMHO these plans are not worth it. Insurance covers loss or damage ( like a teenager with a glass of coke in our house ) and no one covers stupidity. save your money. +1....this is where HN make their money!

2009-12-13 22:14:00 | Considering a 3-year warranty is likely to be around $300, it's not exactly a cheap upsell. Look at it this way: If you're on $20 per-hour, then IF you run into issues and it takes you <15 hours to resolve the problem and get X fixed under the CGA, then you made the right choice and skipped the warranty. If however you have a habit of treating computers and the likes poorly and in a manner that it wasn't designed for (Such as throwing your iTouch in your handback along with keys, nail files etc and it gets scratched) then no amount of CGA or Warranty will help you there. Welcome to the Forums Liddle_Razkal :)

2009-12-13 23:15:00 | The problem however, is if it does go wrong, they will usually try to wiggle out of the CGA, by telling you the problem is caused by misuse, or 'wear and tear'. Then it is you word, against their's. A lot of places will do that even if you *are* covered within their recognised warranty period, heh.
