| 702650 | 2008-09-05 02:30:00 | I was given a Sony DCR-SR42 camera to do some editing for someone. Since it is a Hard Drive Camera (As opposed to my Tape Cameras) it has a series of files in MPEG Format (Some oddball MPEG Format at that). Trying to edit these files with Adobe Premiere gives me no Audio. Movie Maker does not even read them. Nero Vision 4 does give audio but does not give me a separate audio track, Nero result gives very jerky video. On the Mac iMovie and Final Cut does not give Audio either. A friend tried it in Sony Vegas and no audio there either. If Sony software can't handle these files properly what will? Pinnacle Studio is the only one that can handle them that I have found so far, but surely these software manufacturers, particularly Sony who makes the HDD cameras should at least support the format. |

The video club members use a range of different software so that helps to try things with different programs. I am just surprised that the format Sony choose is not compatible with more software. I feel sorry for those who buy HDD cameras and find they can't edit the movies they make. From what I understand there is basic software bundled with these type of cameras but it is about as crappy as MovieMaker. The format it records to is MPEG2-PS. |

| 702653 | 2008-09-05 04:10:00 | I just googled your problem and it would appear that you are not the only one suffering from it. It would appear that you need to use MPEG Streamclip or Visual Hub to convert the footage first before using any video editing app to edit the footage. | juice (14146) | ||
| 702654 | 2008-09-05 05:06:00 | juice yes, I did a lot on google etc as well. Everything I needed done is now done using Pinnacle studio and since hopefully it was a one-off job I don't have to really look any further. Studio had no problems with it at all, it was the only software that did during the testing we did. Pinnacle Studio could also save it off as an AVI and then Premiere could edit it, but the end result a little choppy in the video a bit like Nero's result. What I feel is wrong is Sony selling a camera with a very very limited editing process available. If low end MovieMaker and iMovie can't edit it and high end Adobe Premiere and Final Cut can't edit it then what the hell are they using that particular format for. |

I couldn't agree more but I guess you could say from the people who bought you the ATRAC3 codec which was supposed to be a great codec but didn't work with anything else on the market - what else would you expect. |

| 702657 | 2008-09-05 09:22:00 | Had a bit of a look and foung it is bog standard MPEG-2 which can be dragged and dropped to the timeline of most editors. www.camcorderinfo.com Moviemaker 2 will read these files. Just drag from camcorder to My Videos, then open in MM2 timeline. Save as a MPEG-2 file after editing and then see what freeware stuff is available for DVD creation and burning. Assuming that is what you want to do. I would not like to have the added cost of a editing program on a camcorder. For sure it would be cut down and restricted in use and maybe need an extra burning program to do anything. I have used Pinnacle V.7 to V10, and continue to use it through 3 different camcorders over the years. I wouldn't be interested in learning a new program each time I bought a new camcorder. The software that comes with Sony stuff was real basic and not worth looking at under any circumstances. I am sure other video hobbyists will bear me out on this one. Ken |

Bummer to both companies I feel. WMP11 is pretty darn good to use. As opposed to itunes. My PS3 can rip from cd in both formats AAC and ATRAC. At a high lossless rip setting, ATRAC definitely sounds the better of the two compressions Ken |
