702262 2008-09-03 09:30:00 Hi Guys

The Head Of Telstra Clear says National's plan to get fibre optic cable to most homes is a waste of money. We will probably just d/l more movies.

Will it help New Zealand or should we spend the money on other things

What do you think ?

702263 2008-09-03 09:33:00 Need, not yet, although I can see it becoming more useful in years to come. Want, hell yes!!! Erayd (23)
702264 2008-09-03 10:06:00 Damn fibre to the home - I want fibre to the phone. ;) R2x1 (4628)
702265 2008-09-03 10:06:00 Want yes, need no. qazwsxokmijn (102)
702266 2008-09-03 10:39:00 ADSL2+ fullspeed up/down would be good enough for me, if it worked properly. And no data cap, of course :D

Even if it did go ahead, I doubt I'd be seeing any at my home for years and years.. if ever...

702267 2008-09-03 11:47:00 FTTH is not necessary in NZ, but real broadband is. We are nowhere near getting that yet. wratterus (105)
702268 2008-09-03 14:17:00 I think we need it

I mean do you guys want copper to be with us forever

I say bring on cable but not to the point of covering every bit of NZ in say a year but have a plan so it will eventually replace copper

If I return to NZ after a few years working and living in HK i don't wanna come back and see christchurch and wellington have fibre only and nothing has been done and NZ is still running in fading out copper and bringing more fibre and I hope in 5 years time the entire wellington or christchurch have at least 90% fibre coverage

702269 2008-09-03 19:37:00 Do we need it right now? Probably not. But the point, we will need it in 5-10 years time, so we need to start planning and building right now. As the world moves forward (particularly developing economies in Asia etc.), we must keep up if we are to become a "knowledge economy".

We're already pushing copper to the limits of what it was originally laid for. Telecom's Cabinetisation plan will certainly extend the life of the copper quite a bit, by making technologies like ADSL2+/VDSL more viable. However it is not a long-term solution.

In the same way that the way phone lines were originally laid by the post office (2-3x the capacity they needed), fibre will seem to be 'overkill', but necessary to future-proof.

North Power are putting right past our place here in Whangarei :punk
Telstra are going to be selling the connections to homes.
Should be available by the end of the year.

702271 2008-09-03 22:39:00 Need? Not yet. Want? If they get the plans and prices right, Yes!

One thing is that fibre is easily multiplexed. A while back some science people got 1.27Tb/s over one fibre, with 127 lasers. That's the kind of scalibility we need. Years ago, 56k was blazing! It'll be the same in a few years. Copper really is on it's last legs. With the increased capacaty, it also allows things like HD IPTV, and on-demand movies. I say FTTH FTW!
