| 704267 | 2008-09-10 18:49:00 | Recently scored an old computer from work (well actually one of the workmates scored it, gave it to one of the work techs to look at, who said it had a dead CPU.. so I asked for it and was told yeah, have it). Anyway, it was a black IBM desktop P4. Got it home, pulled the heatsink off and took the CPU out to have a look at what Socket it was (478). Groaned slightly as I had given one of those away.. but figured what the heck, throw it all together, start it up and see what happens. Well it got to BIOS screen and stopped. I got into CMOS, had a fiddle, and rebooted. Now it looked for an OS (drives had been wiped). Weird I thought, it shouldnt get this far. Installed XP Pro. Anyway, as it was running MS updates (it did reboot twice installing a non-signed sound driver so I went to MS for one) I sat there thinking why the heck did it get this far on a dead CPU??? My question here is: what are the symptoms of a dead/dying CPU? For the record, I now have a 2.8GHz (512Mb RAM) P4 based computer and no real use for it lol. I might see if SWMBO wants to upgrade her hardware |

My question here is: what are the symptoms of a dead/dying CPU? That doesn't surprise me, I've seen an awful lot of Business IT Admins who wouldn't know stuffed hardware if they fell over it. Great for you. Dead - doesn't boot at all. No BIOS either. Dying - really weird stuff, had a fried one once, lots of nice assembly looking code appearing all over the screen as it tried to do its thing............. |
