703611 2008-09-08 08:45:00 One of the guys from work recently bought in some biscuits that his elderly mother had baked (supposed to be for this guys kids).
The biscuits reminded me of some I also had when I was a child, and some friends of our parents had the same home-made biscuits.
I asked the guy from work if his mother will share the recipe. But she won't. However she has cooked me another batch of cookies, just for me :D

I would however like to obtain a recipe for these biscuits.

All I can say about them is that they are a dark golden colour, taste like they have golden syrup in them, also contain raisins. And they are NOT Anzac cookies (they contain no oatmeal that I can discern, or coconut). They are also a soft biscuit (not hard and crunchy)

Anyone know the type of biscuits I am talking about and willing to share the recipe? His mother calls them Safari biscuits, though an online search doesn't reveal anything by that name.

703615 2008-09-08 20:11:00 Myth I looked through a fairly old Edmonds recipe book plus several old English recipe books and no mention of it there, sorry. Bantu (52)
703616 2008-09-08 23:00:00 From your description, am just guessing that they sound like hokey pokey biscuits, that have sultanas added.
If you don't have the recipe for hokey pokey bikkies give me a shout.
BTW I'd be a tad suspicious what her 'secret' ingredient is, that made her reluctant to give you the recipe:lol:
Cheers,

703617 2008-09-08 23:34:00 I'd suggest you try a copy of Aunt Daisy's cookbook - although, as Marnie suggests, it sounds like hokey pokey biscuits to me too. nofam (9009)
703618 2008-09-09 18:48:00 Ok, I will check out that idea (the hoikey pokey biscuits)

SWMBO had a taste and she said there may not be golden syrup but treacle in them, hence the dark golden syrupy colour.
She also noted baking soda (how she could discern that is beyond me  )

Safari is a South African brand of raisin, the recipe could have been on the packet.

Baking soda is often used as a raising agent in baking with golden syrup/treacle to counteract its weight. And hokey pokey itself has baking soda in it too.
