824579 2009-10-27 03:46:00 500 mb ram.
Currenty running Nortons nothing found so far. That will be some of the problem- the damn poor thing hasn't got enough grunt to run.

I had a customers Laptop not so long ago, similar spec's - took norton Out and even with the low memory it booted a LOT quicker.Norton Was corrupted and was stopping it from booting. Would boot Ok in safe mode as well. Added in a Gig of RAM, and it was 100% better.

824581 2009-10-27 04:13:00 DCOM won't be it. Ignore it.

Remove Nortons, add another 512mb.
Post your Hijackthis log for Speedy to look at.
Install a decent antivirus - MS Security Essentials for free or NOD32 for pay.,

Install SPybot and Malware Bytes free antispywares.

Run the lot - you can do this in safe mode.

If it still won't boot I'll eat my hat.

Second that. Although I would add at least 1GB, pref 2. I'll pay for the courier bag for the hat.

824584 2009-10-27 06:53:00 Wont let me remove Nortons in safe mode WayneMiddy (14028)
824585 2009-10-27 07:25:00 Use Revo Uninstaller in safe mode - Download from this site (www.revouninstaller.com/) - get the portable then you dont need to install it. When you run it, Find Norton in the list and select advanced mode, Norton will throw its toys out the cot and say it cant run, close Nortons message, let revo do its searches, and it will remove hundreds of entries, there will be two stages reg files and folders, then run the Norton Removal tool (http:) in normal mode to finish the clean up. wainuitech (129)

Make sure that you tick bold entries when you get to those stages.

Your laptop probably uses DDR2 667 RAM, which is cheap as chips. Throw in another 2gb and Vista will run like a dream..:D

When you say "only shows floating logo" what stage do you mean? And what happens after?
