These are what I have come up with. My mate reckons he wants to get into some new/old games(most his games would barely need a 9800gt at the moment however i plan to have this PC going for 2-3 years minimum

Any help with choosing better options(i have no clue about the sound-card, he wants to hook up his PC to his 32" and Surround sound system(unsure if its 5.1 or 7.1) or getting better prices would be appreciated.

824346 2009-10-26 19:15:00 The first i5 build looks juicy. Where have you got the pricing from? wratterus (105)
824347 2009-10-26 19:34:00 Build one is probably best value for money, imo, and will perform well.
Personally I'd probably go for the Phenom build, throw a little extra $$ at the 965BE and a good cooler and bump it up to 4ghz but hey :)

824348 2009-10-26 19:58:00 I would got for the first as well. The i5 should handle anything he throws at it easily.

Don't bother with the sound card though..the integrated already has 6 channel surroud..

You could always add a 4890 later if he needs more gaming power..

824349 2009-10-26 20:05:00 I have just built a machine with the I5 and mobo you have listed. Seems a pretty good combination to me. I have it running at 3.2GHz with stock cooler. Now it matches my E8400 at 3.8GHz on the PCUser Benchmark!! linw (53)
824350 2009-10-26 20:22:00 I'd stay away from onboard sound solutions. I hate the sound of random computer noise leaking through into my iTunes and games. Especially if you're running some nice speakers. But I wouldn't go with that one.

The Asus Xonar DX 7.1 has really good reviews and is $10 cheaper at computerlounge. I'm considering getting the STX at the moment, but that's $259, so probably not in the right price bracket. It also doubles as a good preamp/headphoneamp id you want to put a hifi system through it.

824351 2009-10-26 20:38:00 Second one for me. Or first one, and spend the money saved on gaming keyboards and mice. Software Developer (15363)
824352 2009-10-26 20:56:00 Id rate this case higher

Also note if your going to overclock the I5/I7 there is a issue with Foxconn LGA1156 sockets used by many mobo manufactures.

If your not overclocking your "probably ok" but there is still some concern about long term long jeopardy atm. Id go I7 1366 until the issue plays out and there are a few other advantages anyway. Alternatively ask your supplier to check the socket.
