| 704027 | 2008-09-11 03:04:00 | Want to sort the mess out that is politics in NZ - get rid of MMP for a start - and that doesn't mean going back to First Past the Post, which effectively produced unrepresentative minority (ie more people voted against them than for them) Governments with a working majority, and produced a series of effective parliamentary dictatorships. The Irish system of a Single Transferable Vote (ie voter preferential voting) appears to work OK Introduce and enforce residency requirements for people standing for electorates - minimum residency in the electorate of 12 months before standing for nomination - this would kill the practice of party hacks being foisted on an electorate against the wishes and best interests of the people residing in the electorate, both major parties are guilty of this practice, but Labour really excels at it. Have politicians in parliament who actually do represent their electorate first Enforce candidate and party election funding limits, declaration of assets and interest rules, a breach of which automatically expels the member. Do way with the Maori Seats - surely an anachronism nowadays, and really not in the best interest of Maoris or any other New Zealander. |

Neither national or labour want to change from MMP, so we seem to be stuck with it. Even a referendum to get rid of it wouldn't be binding. |
