As good as the equivalent Bravia but a few hundred $ cheaper.

702684 2009-01-13 00:19:00 On boxing day, I got a 40" Sony W4500. It was about $500 cheaper than the nearest samsung equivalent (7 series). The Samsung 7 series had better features, eg you can connect it up to a network and stream videos off it. The sony only lets you do photos and music.

But I settled on the Sony because it had better image quality, which is what a TV is ultimately for.

We bought a 40" Sony S series (no digital tuner, but does Full HD) for $1700 late last year. Made sense for us here in Qtown since there is no UHF digital service in HD (emailed freeview too and they said there are no plans to roll it out here either :( ).

Its a nice set, but when watching fades between scenes sometimes on broadcast TV, instead of fading smoothly, the picture becomes extremely 'noisey'. Is this noticeble on the V or W series too? Or is this problem remedied by the additional processing engines in those more expensive series TVs?

As for reliability, I have so far once had to switch off the power at the plug to reset the innards of this telly after it got a glitch of some sort and became uncontrollable by either the remote or buttons on top. 10 minutes power off at wall and all was back to normal.
