704160 2008-09-10 22:01:00 How would the car yard know that it was stolen ? If it was dumped somewhere illegal, the tow company takes it back to their yard, and if it 's not claimed then it gets sold.

Misread the post originally took car yard as a place selling cars rather then a towes yard.

704161 2008-09-10 23:14:00 Then your going to all the wrong places, Scrap steel was going at $460 a tonne.

I don't think you get anywhere near the price paid for old steel beams for car bodies.

704162 2008-09-11 00:57:00 Cars, when crushed are processed as heavy gauge for export.

We moved in excess of 300 cars, 500 tonne of light guage and 10 thousand tonne of heavy gauge in the last month or two. The price of scrap has a direct and immediate effect on our day to day operation.

OK but what are you paying for them when they are towed in?

Most places seem to class cars as "Ferrous Inorganic Products consisting mostly of metals in mixed form . e . g . White ware, Car bodies" which is probably shorthand for pay less .

704164 2008-09-11 05:20:00 Cars are classed as cars.

I can't see any relevance as to cartage, my statement was merely what the scrap price for a car recently peaked at, Drive it, push it, tow it, who cares?

Cartage didn't come into it, only part of a car is steel. What I'm trying to get at is does your price account for all the plastic and glass etc or does the body get stripped out before crushing.

704166 2008-09-11 07:36:00 As I said, a car is a car, if you strip her and process it yourself then it will be weighed and processed as light gauge...not as a car.

The engine block/gearbox,suspension components/steering would go through as heavy gauge.

704167 2008-09-14 07:31:00 Well, after a few days, it was stolen again. One of the two license plate was taken off cos it was tight. They have chose to say, ah.. just keep it, they aren't paying for another towing fee or any other fee.

The first time, it appeared they took the car, probably by jump starting, dispensed 1/2 the tank of petrol, took it around the Friday or Saturday for a good night's out cos they had subway napkins and McD or KFC chips stuffed in the front passenger's rear seat compartment and empty drink bottles before ditching the car illegally before tow truck took it.

Tomorrow Monday they were going to take the car to somewhere and see what they could get for it ....
