| 703681 | 2008-09-09 05:08:00 | www.smh.com.au I've read somewhere that the opponents to this project says it will create a black hole, which will consume the earth, solar system, whatever. So, remember to kiss the gf or wife goodbye tomorrow morning, it may be your last. sarel As an old accelerator jockey myself, I can assure you that the world won't end tomorrow - it will take a few weeks yet. When you turn an accelerator on for the first time, you have to make sure that it really works before starting the experimental programme. That means finding the right settings to get a small beam through at low energy. Then, check that the intensity is what you expect it to be - it won't be. About this time you stop and fix something that you thought was installed properly, but wasn't. Then you start to crank up the energy to see if something else will break. That results in the high vacuum going bad as the beam heats things up, so you wait until that stabilises. Something else will break at this point. After much more time than you originally estimated you are ready to wind everything up and let 'er rip. But of course, by then the media will have forgotten about the end of the world, so everything will be all right. Better to worry about global warming, world poverty or Winston Peters. |
