704572 2008-09-11 23:57:00 Kiwi degrees 'worth less' and the brain-drain.

www.stuff.co.nz

Dominion Post says that Kiwi degrees are worthless because these degrees make little differences on the job prospect and earning power. So where do grads go to make money but overseas, the brain-drain.

Which countries do grads go to make good money nowadays?

704573 2008-09-12 00:11:00 London's the big one. As always.

Lots of people going to the states though.

And also Aussie, but both London and Aussie have been kiwi drains since the dawn of European settlement here.

Degrees themselves are worthless, just a piece of paper. It's what you put in and what you take out of it that determines the worth of a degree. And to be honest, most students are just there because they don't know what else to do.

How much better off are the grads if they go to these countries.

704575 2008-09-12 00:36:00 Grads have to pass a certain standard of knowledge and skills before they gain a degree,

This part is correct.

which would better equip them in their jobs.

This part is debatable. Most students see their degree as a meal ticket. Unfortunately, there are many degree-qualified people out there in the real world with no job (or a job that has nothing to do with what they studied for). The real world does not always work (putting on my cynic's hat, 'does not often work'....) the way they teach you at a tertiary education facility.

704576 2008-09-12 00:43:00 I had to laugh at a family member coming off 3.5 years of study, getting 2 or 3 months to do each project (and thinking it was really tough) discovering when they were employed in their chosen field they had to do the equivalent work before lunch, every damn day. 704577 2008-09-12 00:47:00 The facility gets paid for issuing degrees - more degrees = $$$. The degree proves that person has a bit of paper and money has changed hands. Degrees are worth about as much as they ever were, although the holders seem to be able to get through the sausage factory a bit more easily. Basically, if you want someone good at getting degrees, those pieces of paper make a very good indicator.
It is a pity the diploma doesn't show ability or aptitude, if only to save a future employer the expense of tossing a tosser.

704578 2008-09-12 00:53:00 My wife is an HR Director for a major company here and among job applications she would consider someone with a degree over one without. Someone without would barely get an interview.

It is like that more-so in UK as my two Sister Inlaws are also in very high jobs there and not having a degree there you would barely get a foot in the door in the corporate world, a lot of places have stepped that minimum requirement to an MBA over an average JoeBloggs degree.

Are there not enough practical skills at tertiary education. Then shouldn't there something to be done about this.

How much are the grads better off going overseas.

704580 2008-09-12 01:53:00 Did a Bachelors Degree and i am working in a completely different industry earning twice as much as i would if i were to be hired by someone using the skills i studied for.

I know this because i worked at a firm for 2yrs using the skills i studied for earning an insulting amount. The only way to make it big in NZ with your chosen skill set is to go into Business yourself or be hired by the Government.

704581 2008-09-12 01:54:00 People with a Diploma / Degree and no other skills can only judge others by the bunting they display. (A cluster of Degrees / Diplomas is a bit like the bunting on a homecoming naval vessel - ornamental and mostly worthless, but can cheer up the relatives a bit.)
A Qualification does not mean a person is an inept waste of space any more than the reverse is true.
