| 704150 | 2008-09-10 07:40:00 | We had a car that is 20yr old, the battery didn't charge up but apart from that it works if not a bit aged . It doesn't have rust . They left it at the backyard and some people came in and enquired for $200 and didn't want to buy . Then one night the car was stolen . The police found it at a caryard and they wanted $250 or $300 delivered back . They dropped it to $180 which they just paid for . They also waived the $13/day storage fee . Which I don't know why because, the car's not worth that much yet they paid for it, and now they say they wanna sell it on trademe asap or dispose it but wouldn't that cost more money again? Anyway, when it comes to situations like these, we the victims have to pay the $180 fee to get it back? Is that right or is it they do it because a cheap car like that legal action is not a viable option . If on the other hand, if a late model Toyota was stolen and put in a caryard, do they again ask for money or . . . . . Just out of interest . |

How would the car yard know that it was stolen ? If it was dumped somewhere illegal, the tow company takes it back to their yard, and if it 's not claimed then it gets sold. It is unfair that you should pay, was the car insured ? talk to your insurance company about it, they may pay the fees. |

Well anyway they paid the money, the guys changed a battery and it appears to be working, but not sure if it would hold a charge, may just sell it for $100 or $200 on trademe and if not may just dispose it. I was just reading about cancelling registration of the car but you need to hand in the registration plates as well ... so that was a no goer cos .. we couldn't touch the car until you paid the caryard. |

Earlier this year Pick A Part were offering around $300-350 if it was running with current reg +wof. Scrap is only ~$100 a tonne for steel. |

| 704159 | 2008-09-10 12:04:00 | I watched an episode of the latest Fifth Gear series the other day on the net & they did exactly this - the presenter bought a running, taxed, MOT'ed (in the UK) Astra for something like £160, drove it to an auction & was sold for ~£70 profit the same day to a scrap metal dealer.
