Businesses are introducing the in-house weight-loss programmes to help improve employees' health and cut sick days."

Wait for it, 10 years time, the health/green/food/whatever police will be crashing through your front door to see what you might be eating in secret.

703968 2008-09-10 01:08:00 I must have missed the bit where they said that they were forcing employees to take it.

Good on them I say, size 26 is obscene. Someone needed to give them a push, and now they've lost weight. Awesome. What does Orwell have to do with it?

Nor did it say they aren't. And exactly, what if you decline?

George Orwell, 1984: "all-knowing government which uses pervasive and constant surveillance of the populace, insidious and blatant propaganda, and brutal control over its citizens."

Well seems to me to be getting that way.

Pick on smokers.
Pick on fat people - and make it the FAT in food, not the fact they may not do enough exercise.
Ban certain foods from schools.
Ban schools selling chocolate.
Ban anyone raising money by having sausage sizzles.
Ban hard ground under play equipment.
Ban kids doing anything where they might get scratched.
Ban smacking.
Ban...
Ban....

703972 2008-09-10 03:22:00 I don't see any problem in picking on fatties.

Unless you happen to like type-2 diabetes, and cram packed hospitals. I can't believe people let themselves get to that point. And then I can't believe that people think it's OK to stay that way.

There's no control going on there. It's voluntary. Usually I'd agree with you about increasing surveillance, etc. But this particular example has more to do with helping people out of a crappy situation than any sort of Orwellian repression machine. What are they banning here? I didn't see anything about that in the article. Or have we stopped talking about the article, and just about society in general now?

Is it? There have always been fat people, since when did workplaces decide its OK to "encourage" them or whatever? Because its all over the place now, FAT, Drinking, kid protection. And on and on. Its just another symptom of harassing people. For their own good of course.
You might not care because you aren't fat, or have kids, or drink or whatever the current weeks crime is, but wait until they are monitoring your biscuits in your home in the evening.

703974 2008-09-10 04:38:00 I'm with pctek on this one, although I think her views are a bit more extreme than mine - I don't mind things like employers *offering* some kind of weight loss program, but Kiwi society today has far more government interference than it needs. And believe me, lots of it is forced whether we want it or not. Erayd (23)

703976 2008-09-10 06:44:00 I could interpret this as pctek being 200kg, drinks a crate a day, smokes three packs a day, keeps her kids chained to the bed so she can whack them at leisure, and likes to view hardcore porn.

Of course, I know she doesn't do all of those things, but as yet, the government are still looking into this.
