I am restoring a test instrument and the case is painted with black "crinkle" paint that has deteriorated and is flaking off so I want to refinish it. This is the stuff that looks like you laid it on too thick and it went into fine wrinkles as it dried.

I have found spray cans of "crackle" which is a much bigger pattern and gives "ye olde antique" look, but that's not the stuff I need.

I need a source for the fine stuff, or an idea as to what sort of painting establishment might be able to do the whole job. My web searches have brought up tantalising snippets of info about a similar finish on some car or motorcycle parts, but nobody bothers to name the product!!

Any ideas?

Cheers

It's called hammerite.

No it's not Hammerite, that produces a dimpled effect like you get if there is oil or silicon spray on the substrate .

I need very fine wrinkles, similar to the look you get if you lay paint on too thick and the surface dries and wrinkles up, only much finer .

Here ( . imagef1 . net . nz/files/Crinkle-2 . jpg" target="_blank">www . imagef1 . net . nz) is a screen shot of a 2-3cm square area . It is hard to show the crinkle pattern as the lighting isn't good and flash made it worse, but you should be able to get an idea of the fineness of the texture . I might get a better photo if the weather improves!

And guys, I've Googled extensively on all conceivable search terms over quite some period of time . There is no shortage of hits, but nothing leads to a product available in NZ, and you can't easily ship spray cans in from overseas .

If it was that easy, I wouldn't be asking . . . . . . . . . . .

703472 2008-09-08 05:08:00 Can you get VHT Wrinkle Plus at somewhere like Repco? PaulD (232)

A search on Repco's site produced no hits on VHT or spray cans, but i will make a personal enquiry by phone .

Crinkle paint is a damned nuisance because dirt gets into it and is almost impossible to clean out, and although I could just over spray it with satin black, some areas are badly flaked and it would look naff .

According to the NZ CPI inflation calculator, this instrument would have cost the equivalent of well over $100,000+ in today's money, based on a (guesstimated) buy price of 2500 pounds in 1955, which sounds reasonable for a laboratory standard instrument used to maintain commercial airline radio equipment, so I think it is worth the effort to make it look as good as possible .

703474 2008-09-08 06:15:00 Try a search for "textured paint". That looks to be available in NZ. A graffiti-proof instrument? :D Graham L (2)
