2008-09-07 22:30:00 | Facts Are Astounding. I have no intention of starting a religious discussion/argument but I simply want to put some astonishing figures before you. Im certain that you will be impressed. Whats so special about The Bible? It is uniquely popular. It is the most successful literary creation ever. It is more influential than Shakespeare or any other great text. It is completely international. Homer (the Iliad and the Odyssey) has been translated into 40 languages, Shakespeare 60 and The Bible to well over 2000 ten times more than any other book. It is every publishers dream the worlds best seller. Forty four million copies sell every year. In the average American household there are 6.8 Bibles. All versions of The Bible sell well all the time. Is it weird, wonderful or just plain baffling in this increasingly godless age when the range of books grows wider each year, that this one book should go on selling so well?

And it's popular with publishers too. The reason it's so popular with publishers? No royalties!!! Personally, I prefer science fiction. So much more likely... :) |

2008-09-07 23:25:00 | Sell? Who sells them?  There are many Christian bookshops in NZ that do an (obviously) roaring trade although I can't recall any such shop with queues out the door. I suppose that if you are a bookseller that wants to make a penny or two you would stock books that sell well whatever the subject. I know I would. Why would you not want to keep a bestseller on your shelves? But it does seem, going by the figures, that The Bible does not need to be sold - it sells itself.

2008-09-07 23:34:00 | I wonder how many Gideon bibles are printed and distributed each year? What percentage that is of the figure you have given? | John H (8) | |
2008-09-07 23:41:00 | I'm wondering why you'd need over 6 bibles per household... True, but we have two in a two person household, and used to have three! And we aren't even Christians! We both have one we were each given as kids (mine is now 53 years old), and I used to have the family Bible (a mid 19th Century tome - a thudding great thing, leather bound, and build like a doorstop). It was lent to another branch of the family who wanted to display it at a funeral, and it has never been returned. Somehow I don't expect to see it again. It wouldn't take long to build up over 6 per household with one per person (at least in the Bible belt). And Americans seem to breed like flies don't they SJ? ;)
