704791 2008-09-12 23:02:00 I've been contacted by Sky with what seems like a good offer for MySky HDi - free install, 6 months free rental, and 50% of the startup/sports package, meaning the cost per month for 6 months will be only $32.75. We can then disconnect after 6 months (once the cricket is finished) for about $175, or keep it going at the full price...

I'm normally averse to having to pay for things like this, but it seems like it might be worth a six-month "trial". My question, though, is how I could/would integrate it with my current TV/HDD recorder setup.

Currently, I have my tv receiving the HDD recorder on Component Video In (which uses the sound input connectors from AV1, meaning I can't use AV1 as well as CVI), the PS2 on AV2, and AV3 (side input) receives the signal from the computer for anything I've recorded on the computer hard drive.

The HDD recorder receives a composite signal (AV) from the VCR, which is hardly used except for old videos, and when we want to dub old home movies onto the HDD recorder).

It seems to me that the usual arrangement for MySky HDi would be to have the signal going direct into the TV, but do you know if MySky can be plugged into my HDD recorder? It's a Panasonic, and it has SCART connectors, and I seem to recall a while back that sky decoders used SCART. The way I see it there are two questions - what physical connection options are there for connecting the MySky box to my HDD recorder? and would it cause any issues with copy protection, etc (like when you play a DVD on a PS2 plugged into a VCR - the macrovision "flickering" protection)?

704793 2008-09-13 00:19:00 Thanks Bantu,

In the past, there was never any problem with running a Sky decoder to a VCR, which enabled you to record whatever channel Sky was on at the time. Even though MySky has a built-in HDD, are you still able to run the decoder through, say, an external HDD recorder, or does HDCP put a spanner in the works?

704794 2008-09-13 01:12:00 If it uses HDCP, then it will probably downsample protected content to standard definition unless you use HDMI & a HDCP capable TV Greven (91)
704795 2008-09-13 02:38:00 Why would you want MySky HDi if you don't have a HD TV?

MySky (standard) would be cheaper, but I don't know if they will give you the same deal though, but worth asking right?

Looking at their website (for new subscribers at least), it's all the same whether you get digital or HDi.

I'm not too fussed about HD or not - I've never really thought about getting Sky before, but this seemed like a good deal (HD or otherwise), that's why I'm considering it.

Has anyone got MySky HDi connected to an external recorder of some kind. Would really like to hear if it works, and what (if any) issues there are.

704797 2008-09-13 08:43:00 Yup, I have my MySky HDi hooked up to my Sony DVD recorder. Only got it installed on Wednesday, so still playing around with it, but it seems to "work" (as in I can record the Sky signal on the DVD recorder). One thing I've found more useful is the MySky "playlist" -- I can record a few things I want to keep, then set a playlist going and record all the programmes overnight :) davehartley (3487)
704798 2008-09-13 20:35:00 From what I have read MySky HDi currently records 2 channels and you can watch a third that you have previously recorded (From Planner) the same as MySky. They play to change that so it can record 4 channels at a time and that will just be a software download done automatically from Sky's end.

MySky has done software updates a few times over the couple of years I have had it making small changes to the way it works, most for the better.
