705764 2008-09-18 03:17:00 You're wrong.

Who is wrong, and what is he wrong about?

If you mean Deane F, he is right in saying 90 proof does not equal 90% alcohol. Proof and % are two totally different things.

Proof spirit is a spirit containing 50% of alcohol by volume at a temperature of 60 degrees F. Each degree of proof is equal to one half of one percent of alcohol. Therefore a spirit of 90 proof contains 45% of alcohol and a spirit of 150 proof contains 75% of alcohol.

Formerly absinthe used to be bottled at a proof of 136 (or 68% alcohol), but I am not sure what proof it is now.

705766 2008-09-18 08:34:00 My "Collins Gem" whisky reference book says of Oban 14 year old
strength 43%
taste rating 2-3
comments - an intriguing complex malt with a full Island character which is balanced by a soft highland finish.

Glenfiddich, on the other hand, is rated a 2, which means that it is a slightly softer. If you are not that used to single malts then it should suit. However I see that you are used to a Glenlivet, which is rated 3-4, so your tastes are a bit stronger.

My preference is a Glenmorangie (with addition of about 40% water), which is also 3-4.

However this is not a competition, it is about enjoyment. Give me a Glenfiddich, and I will not turn it down, but really be appreciative.

Just enjoy !!!

705767 2008-09-18 10:07:00 Never mind the island character, or even highland finish; Will the lawn mower run on it?

I just checked, our water is all rated 100%. What do you dilute yours with to get 40% ;)
