It tells you about the difference between single malts and blends, and the evolution of blending, and if I recall correctly it covers which distilleries contribute to which blend. It also covers quite a lot of other interesting stuff, like how whisky is made etc.

If you go to this page: www.whiskygalore.co.nz you will see the books and magazines available from the whisky store in ChCh, some of which may cover blends. I notice that it says that Michael Jackson's book is out of stock (he died last year), but the last time I went in there, they had the book on the shelf even though it was also said to be out of stock then.

I picked up a DVD in Scotland that spends more time on blends than malts, but my son has it on loan, and I can't recall its name for the moment.

705754 2008-09-17 08:21:00 Talking of whisky..............

The Mill has Vat 69, Whyte & McKay and Clan Campbell 1 litre bottles $11 or so off (i.e., a third saving!) according to an email they sent me. SWMBO kindly offerred to call in and get some for me on her way past, but they were full price. She rang me and I checked the email, sure enough it says "online and instore". So she went and berated the shop assistant (I wince at the thought!!) who quickly buckled (who wouldn't?) and gave the reduced prices, saying you only get the good prices if you say you got an email. It doesn't say that on the email, though.

They also have Glenfiddich 15 YO $70, Dalmore 12 YO $70, Glenmorangie 10 YO $60 for single malt enthusiasts.

705755 2008-09-17 08:38:00 If any of you gents are ever in Dunedin, be sure to call in to Scotia in the historic railway station - they have around 300 single malts for your pleasure!

Take a look (www.scotiadunedin.co.nz)

705758 2008-09-17 19:41:00 he brought me some Oban Single Malt Scotch 14 Year. (Whisky).

What am I to expect?

I like Glenlivet Single, so what's the deal? Is this supposed to be a real difference?

Glad to see you noticed we have Dunedin J,but Scotland is adjoined to England not NZ,but not too bad for a yank.

705759 2008-09-17 21:15:00 Absinthe is awesome stuff. :D

So long as 'awesome' means "disgusting firewater that leaves you with a very sore head after minimal intake", I agree.

Had some in the Czech Republic a couple of years ago - never again!

Interestingly, when we were leaving Frankfurt, the guy behind the check-in counter asked if we were carrying any Absinthe in our baggage. Apparently it is illegal in Germany!! He then went on to tell us that a friend of his regularly catches a bus to Czech and bring a few bottles back on the bus (no stopping at the border, now that Czech is part of the EU)! :D Who says Germans don't have a sense of humour! :banana

705760 2008-09-17 21:17:00 And not tap water.

Depends on where you are. In ChCh our water is artesian and untainted by chlorine, fluoride etc. It tastes clean, fresh and sweet, and is perfectly fine with a good single malt. My experience of the water in Auckland, Wellington, and England on the other hand, suggests you may be right in those circumstances. It would be like using water from your local swimming pool. :(

I had a little water yesterday. (Tap, stirred and allowed to settle.) That should serve to go with any whisky I may drink for the next seven days.

705762 2008-09-17 23:26:00 I used to drink absinthe straight. Which is actually 90% alcohol. Not anymore. Slightly older, and a whole bunch wiser.

The Absinthe sold in NZ is 90 proof - not 90% alcohol. Not quite the same thing...
