You have possibly been drinking the 12 year old, which gets a rating of 85. In theory, your Oban shouldn't be quite as good, but hey, it depends on your taste and what tickles your individual palate, and how it changes over time. I used to loathe Laphroaig, but now love it. Yummy. You may prefer a West Highland style to a Speyside malt, and disagree with Jackson. Enjoy! How do they rate Caol Ila John? I'm a big fan of the Islay style myself! |

| 705747 | 2008-09-17 01:09:00 | pfft, is that all you can do? It takes a good 85% and up to do it for me. Tequila FTW! Are you talking about proof? Or actual? Tequila hovers around the 40% mark. I used to drink absinthe straight. Which is actually 90% alcohol. Not anymore. Slightly older, and a whole bunch wiser. |

| 705749 | 2008-09-17 02:38:00 | How do they rate Caol Ila John? I'm a big fan of the Islay style myself! The lowest score for Caol Ila is 79, but ratings for their other expressions are in the low to mid 80's. The Caol Ila 12 year old, which is probably their bog standard expression is 83, which isn't half bad. Colour: Vinho verde Nose: Soft. Juniper. Garden mint. Grass. Burnt grass. Body: Lightly oily. Simultaneously soothing and appetising. Palate: Lots of flavour development. Becoming spicy. Vanilla, nutmeg, white mustard. Complex. Flavours combine with great delicacy. Finish: Very long. I am not too sure how much I go for all these descriptions (wine tasting notes as well). However, his book does steer you towards the goodies and away from the distasteful! |

| 705751 | 2008-09-17 02:43:00 | @ nofam - if you are a fan of the Islay style, take a trip across the water to Campbeltown on the mainland, and try Springbank. Drool worthy. If you go to Whisky Galore in ChCh you can get some independent bottlings of Springbank as well, and they are delicious (better but more expensive than the standard 12 year old expression by Springbank itself). | John H (8) | ||
