705662 2008-09-16 07:14:00 It appears that there's a range war . . the wagons are circling and the "Indians" (sorry for the insensitivity) are running around like a bunch of . . . er . . . wild Indians .

C/P:

"At a time of heightened tensions between the Riverside County Sheriff's office and the Soboba Band of Luiseno Indians, deputies today sought two suspected gunmen from the reservation who are believed to have committed an armed home invasion robbery in nearby San Jacinto .

Deputies said no shots were fired this time and no one was injured in the latest incident, which was reported about 11 a . m . Saturday at a home in the 1100 block of East Main Street in downtown San Jacinto, according to San Jacinto police Sgt . Rick Garcia .

Witnesses trailed the suspects, who were armed with chrome-plated handguns, as the men drove past a tribal checkpoint and entered the Soboba Reservation . The suspect vehicle was located by a sheriff's helicopter outside a home on the Soboba reservation and seized for evidence by Hemet-based deputies, Garcia said .

Investigators have identified the suspects as Soboba tribal members David Neil Morreo, 34, and Thomas Charles Durnin, 19, Garcia said . Both men remain at large and should be considered armed and dangerous, Garcia said .

The armed robbery comes after months of tensions between the Indians and the sheriff's office, which have resulted in charges of racism by the tribal government and allegations from the sheriff that the tribal checkpoint is hindering the investigation of violent crimes . Five Soboba tribal members have been killed in shootouts with local law enforcement officers so far this year .

Last week, deputies arrested one man and sought another in connection with guns and ammunition found in a stolen vehicle on the reservation, according to sheriff's Lt . Patricia Knudson . Deputies seized two rifles and an illegally altered shotgun, and are seeking a Soboba resident named Whitecloud Trujillo in connection with that incident .

In Saturday's robbery, a 23-year-old San Jacinto woman told police two males pushed their way inside her home, pulled shiny, chrome-plated handguns and demanded to know where her roommate was, Garcia said .

When they learned the roommate wasn't there, they demanded anything of value and took the woman's roommate's wallet, Garcia said .

The suspects were leaving in a white, two-door Chrysler Sebring with tinted windows and 20-inch to 22-inch chrome rims, when the woman's roommate and another man returned, Garcia said .

The suspects threatened the roommate at gunpoint when he tried to get their license plate number, Garcia said . Then they drove east on Main Street through San Jacinto .

The roommate and his acquaintance got in a vehicle and followed the suspects on Main Street and east on Soboba Road, and turned around when the Sebring drove past the guard shack at the Soboba Indian Reservation, Garcia said .

Deputies said one suspect was described as “John,” a Native American man in his 20s, about 6 feet tall and 175 pounds, with black hair, green eyes and a “Soboba Rez” tattoo on his left forearm . He was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, black baseball cap, dark blue jeans and tan shoes .

The other suspect was described as a Native American man in his 20s, about 5 feet 10 inches tall, weighing 250 pounds, with a darker complexion . He had black hair, a goatee, and a large “Soboba” tattoo on his neck . He was last seen wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, a dark beanie, dark pants and tan boots .

In May, three Soboba tribal members were killed in shootouts with Riverside County deputies on the reservation . Local law enforcement officials said suspects with high-powered assault rifles have fired on deputies, patrol cars and helicopters during the past year . A total of five Soboba have been killed by deputies in shootouts since December .

Soboba tribal chairman Robert Salgado maintains his people are not above the law, but they have sovereign rights in Indian country and US authorities have no rights to enter or harass the residents .

The local custom is . . . and the "Natives" here call themselves "Indians" . . so we just accept it as a given .

"Indians" to us are also people from India .

705665 2008-09-16 22:05:00 Would like to know the background to the conflict. I am not sure what all the fuss is about the weapons though SJ - I thought Americans of whatever ethnic origin had an inalienable constitutional right to bear arms. Isn't that what old Heston was always rabbiting on about? John H (8)

Interesting, when I was in Victoria BC, about 3 years ago, my sister and her family (they are very PC, unlike my wife & me), insisted that Indians should now be called "First Nations People"; what a mouthfull:eek:
I never met any, or I don't think I did, meet any er . . "First Nation's People", so I don't really know what they preferred .
I might've been surprised to find "mebbe jest injuns"

Since the Indian Nations declare themselves as sovereign, they are not under the direct protection of the US Constitution at all . They TRY to invoke it, but a good civil law attorney can blow it out as a non-issue to any argument in court .

Unfortunately, the use of semi-automatic weapons against flying police aircraft is a Federal Offense anywhere . . and the fact that the tribes declare their lands as "off-limits" to police and law authorities yet shoot at aircraft and police cars from the cover of their reservations makes for a lot of anger and discontent by the local citizens .

This "blast-and-dash" to the reservation after shooting up local markets, strong-arm robberies and purse snatchings makes the police even more so aggravated .

One such robbery in daylight this AM against a very senior-citizen in the parking lot of a K-Mart here in San Jac had two female accomplices stabbing the old guy with screwdrivers in the face until he fell out of his own car which the "Indians" drove into the reservation and got away taking his wallet, credit cards and jewelry .

They cannot be taken into custody until the Federal Court sets a legal writ of extraction under habeas corpus ad subjiciendum as a precedent . . which the Riverside Sheriff's Department and the local citizens wants to be done .

705668 2008-09-17 05:22:00 Its a bit like South Osettia/Georgia then? Small sections of a country warring against its surrounding "neighbour".

I hadn't realised that the constitution didn't apply if a reservation was regarded as being sovereign territory - I just hadn't thought about it.

Thanks SJ

You could try re-writing the first sentence in English and you may get a sensible response. However, I wouldn't bother because it appears to be an irrelevant troll anyway.

705671 2008-09-17 22:10:00 If Indian reservations are outside of the US Constitution's jurisdiction it kinda make me wonder why they didn't imprison the terror suspects there instead of in Guantanamo Bay. Would have been a lot less expensive. Deane F (8204)
