707489 2008-09-24 07:50:00 And you thought NCEA was bad!!!

Pittsburgh Public Schools officials have enacted a policy that sets 50 percent as the minimum score a student can receive for assignments, tests and other work (www.post-gazette.com). District spokeswoman Ebony Pugh said, the 50 percent minimum gives children a chance to catch up and a reason to keep trying. If a student gets a 20 percent in a class for the first marking period, he or she would need a 100 percent during the second marking period just to squeak through the semester. The district and teachers union issued a joint memo to ensure staff members' compliance with the policy, which was already on the books but enforced only at some schools. At this rate, it won't be long before schools institute double extra credit Mondays and Fridays to ensure students don't take three day weekends.

More info on this sorry affair can be found here (www.post-gazette.com).

707491 2008-09-24 09:53:00 And they wonder why paper qualifications are regarded with such derision by all except those whose only mark of success is a similar piece of paper. R2x1 (4628)
707492 2008-09-24 10:05:00 That is the reason society is becoming so sick because people are being protected from reality.:annoyed: mikebartnz (21)

707494 2008-09-25 04:00:00 I failed (sorry, "not achieved") a fair few of my externals and still passed (if only just in Y12!). I am NOT an academic person :)

What subjects are you studying and what year are you in?

Take heart! You can overcome the handicaps of NCEA! More years ago than I like to remember (and in the days when teachers taught and students damned well sat up and listened or else) I failed my final year at Grammar School very successfully indeed, and with very little effort, but I never failed any examination or ability test after that chapter closed. Everything I did after leaving school was all real-world stuff that actually mattered to me.

Being a graduate of the School of Common-Sense has enabled me achieve far more in my life than any of the academic qualifications I failed could ever have, or any of those I now hold have helped me.

I have a friend with zero qualifications who has built by the blisters on his hands and the sweat of his brow a multi-million dollar business that employs hundreds of people, and without cheating or hurting anybody on the way.

He'd make a better PM than John Key (god help us all), don't know if he owns any shares in the railways though.

Cheers
