826452 2009-11-02 04:55:00 Hi All,

My MD has a Macbook Pro and unfortunately the HDD has crashed. He has a time-machine backup on a external drive and the last backup he did was on Friday. I have ordered a new HDD for him but have a few questions about the whole process. After i install the new HDD .. what next?

1. How do I make use of the time-machine backups?
2. Do I need to install the OSX from the disks?
3. Do I need to reinstall all this softwares as well?
4. Or do I just plug the external HDD and the time-machine will install everything back to normal as it was last friday?

Any helps is appreciated as this is the first time am dealing with time-machine or in that case a mac.

Google has been my best friend since I have been in IT :p , just that I wasnt too sure if the time-machine reinstall the OSX and all the softwares as well or it just re-creates the user profile as it previous was.. thanks for the help anyways.

826455 2009-11-02 05:53:00 You will need your osx install disc, it will give you an option to install from TM bachup plod (107)
826456 2009-11-02 05:57:00 I guess it would depend what was backed up on time machine.
You can't boot from time machine so you would have to boot using the OS X CD regardless whether you reinstall from the CD or from time machine.
Quite a good article here.

826459 2009-11-03 23:06:00 Just an update....on the MacBook Pro

everything went as planned.. took the old HHD out and installed the new one. booted from the Snow Leopard Update dvd (didnt have the install dvd but all i needed was the restore option), formatted the new HDD under Mac OSX and choose the lastest backup that was done under time machine and it took about 3hrs. restarted after restore finished and everything worked as normal. i know my way around Macs but this was my first with new hdd installation and restoring. Thanks for all your help.
