826205 2009-11-01 09:29:00 Just wondered whether anyone else has had this sort of problem ...

I've been running Win 7 RC (build 7100) for a number of months, and am quite impressed with it. However, I have had a weird thing happen a few times, and I don't quite know why -- or how to fix it!

Every now and then, a file will somehow get "un-owned", and whatever I do I can't get it back again :groan: I notice this when either I try to delete a file and it won't go, or try and edit a file and I can't. Looking at the permissions for the file in question, the owner of the file is "Unable to display current owner" (!), and even from an elevated command prompt I can't re-take ownership of the file.

Two questions:

1) Why does this happen? :stare:

2) How on earth can I take ownership back of my file? :help:

826206 2009-11-01 11:22:00 Had this happen to a friend of mine and I suspected malware issues. After scanning twice with some av programs the problem didn't reoccur again...

Have you added take ownership to your context menu?

I tried scanned with a number of AV progs -- no infections detected.

Nope, but trying to take ownership from an elevated command prompt didn't work so I don't think that would have either :(

I did this -- it found no errors, but upon restart the offending file has vanished! Very odd.

Well for the moment it all appears OK! Any insight as to why it happened would still be appreciated ;)
