826188 2009-11-01 08:23:00 A friend of mine wants to get Windows 7 to replace his XP... we know we can't upgrade XP to 7 directly, rather through a clean install... however can we still use a Windows 7 upgrade license to go from XP to 7 via a clean install? I can't find anything on the net that actually says this works, everything just says it must be a clean install. Going from 32bit XP to 64bit W7 if that makes any difference?

If there are any links to something saying that this works, I'd appreciate it (it'd make my friend more comfortable about it :) )

Cheers,
Mike.

826190 2009-11-01 11:16:00 Yep, you can clean install with an u/g disc just like you could with vista. Whether XP/Vista was on previously doesn't matter:) Blam (54)

826192 2009-11-01 21:51:00 Over the weekend I upgraded from Xp service pack 3 to Win7Home premium/32 using a program called laplink. (Laplink.com) Laplink priced at $us20.00 and does a seamless install and puts everything back. No need to reinstall any program other than anti-virus and some music download gear. The whole process took just over an hour and the software comes with a very clear electronic manual.

If you are all all hesitant about the upgrade then have a look at Laplink. Can't speak for those who want to go from XP to 64bit though.

826193 2009-11-01 22:11:00 If you are all all hesitant about the upgradeDid you use a Windows 7 upgrade version? Or a full or OEM version? We're not hesitant about moving to W7, we're hesitant about buying an upgrade version and having it not work (instead requiring a full version).

Cheers,
Mike.
